Meridian Television

Meridiano Televisión is a Venezuelan open television channel, launched on December 5, 1997 with programming focused on sports. It is owned by the Dearmas Block, the company that owns the newspaper Meridiano and the radio station Radio Deporte, which also specializes in sports.

History

The concession for the creation of the canal was granted by the Government in 1992 to the owners of the Dearmas Block. The channel was launched on December 5, 1997 at 07:00 pm as a test signal from the main transmitter in Cerro Ávila with the slogan The sports specialists. On December 8, transmissions begin from El Volcán, where the transmitter that covers the northeastern area of the Caracas Metropolitan Area is located. The first broadcast was a Caracas FC match held at the end of 1997.

The Meridiano Televisión signal could be tuned through channel 39 for the northwest of Caracas, channel 37 for the southeast of the city, channel 35 for the parish of Caricuao and channel 36 for the Litoral. At first, its programming was based on productions imported from other channels. On December 9, Meridiano Television broadcast live the International Professional Boxing contest for the Bantamweight Championship, between Edison Torres "Guapito" and Alcibes Flores at 07:00 pm and, later, the match between Lazio and Rapid Vienna of the UEFA Cup from the Olympic Stadium in Rome, Italy.

From mid-2014 to 2017, the channel began broadcasting live together with TeleAragua. In addition, TVR was added, which, in May 2016, was relaunched as TLT.

In 2020, the channel stopped transmitting uninterruptedly 24 hours a day, which is why it begins its transmissions at 06:00 am and ends at 12:00 am.

Sports programming

Meridian Television broadcast events that covered most sports, mainly baseball, with the Major League Baseball (2005-2015), the Caribbean Series (2002-2018), the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (2001-2020, 2022-present) and Major League Professional Baseball (2023-present).

The channel also owns the rights to multiple other sports events.

It also broadcast the beauty pageant Señorita Deporte, in which exclusively girls who practiced some type of sports discipline competed.
