The Mercedes-Benz Necar 5 is a prototype car developed by the German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz in the year 2000. It works with a fuel cell, whose hydrogen is obtained from stored methanol in a tank. Methanol remains liquid at room temperature, so it can be handled and distributed in a similar way to common fuels such as gasoline or diesel.

With a range of 450 km, the Necar 5 reaches a top speed of 150 km/h. The fuel cell system was installed in a standard Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
