Personal life

At age 14, Griffith began dating 22-year-old Don Johnson, her mother's co-star in The Harrad Experiment; the relationship culminated in a marriage that only lasted six months, from January to July 1976.

On September 8, 1981, Griffith married Steven Bauer, her co-star in the television movie She's in the Army Now. They had a son, Alexander Bauer, born August 22, 1985. The couple divorced in 1989 after a long separation. During her separation from Bauer, Griffith had problems with cocaine and drinking.

In 1988, after completing his rehabilitation, he reconnected with Johnson. They remarried on June 26, 1989. Their daughter, Dakota Johnson, was born on October 4, 1989. They separated in March 1994, reconciled later that year, but separated again in May 1995.

Griffith later began a relationship with Antonio Banderas, her Two Much co-star. After their respective divorces, Griffith and Banderas got married on May 14, 1996 in London, UK. Her daughter, Stella del Carmen Banderas, was born on September 24, 1996 in Marbella, Spain.

In 2000, Griffith returned to rehab for treatment of an addiction to painkillers. In August 2009, Griffith returned to rehab for what her publicist called "part of a routine plan." In December of that year, she had surgery for skin cancer.

In June 2014, Griffith and Banderas announced their intention to divorce "in an amicable manner. In December 2015, the divorce was finalized.

Speaking at a Women's Brain Heat Initiative mental health roundtable in Los Angeles in October 2017, Griffith revealed that she suffers from epilepsy, diagnosed in 2011, and has been seizure-free in recent years thanks to stress control. Her divorce from Banderas, she explained, helped combat it.
