Meiogyne is a genus of phanerogamous plants with 24 species belonging to the Annonaceae family. They are native to South and Southeast Asia to Australia (southwestern India and Indochina to Australia, including Fiji and New Caledonia).

Description

They are shrubs or trees, with simple hairs. The leaves with oblique secondary veins close together. Axillary inflorescences. Bisexual flowers. Sepals 3, valvate, united at the base. Petals 6, in 2 whorls. Fruits monocarps 1-3 [-5], generally sessile, ovoid. Seeds several to many per monocarp.

The fruits of the species Meiogyne cylindrocarpa are edible and have a sweet taste and their taste has been compared as similar to that of a chicozapote with a floral flavor.

Taxonomy

The genus was described by Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel and published in Annales Museum Botanicum Lugduno-Batavi 2: 12. 1865. The type species is: Meiogyne virgata (Blume) Miq.
