From its ancient Nahuatl name, Tecamachales: Tetl, stone; kamachili, jaw; ko, en, which would mean "in the stone jaw". From Medellín, by the consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius, the same as Medellín, Extremadura.

History

In pre-Columbian America the place was called Tecamachales. After the battle of La noche triste in 1520, Hernán Cortés ordered Gonzalo de Sandoval to found Medellín. In the year 1529, Don Juan de Zumárraga, bishop of Mexico, arrived in the town for the inauguration of the local church, considered the second in New Spain, which received the name of San Miguel Arcángel, in honor of the patron saint of the town.

During the Mexican war of independence, Nicolás Bravo was magnanimous with the enemy, an episode is told about him that highlights him as a man of great morals and courage: In San Agustín Del Palmar he learned that the royalist army under On the orders of Félix María Calleja del Rey, he managed to capture his father, Don Leonardo Bravo, and that in exchange for releasing him, Viceroy Francisco Javier Venegas demanded that he abandon the fight and the insurgent army; otherwise, he would execute the prisoner. Knowing this, General José María Morelos authorized him to offer 800 Spanish prisoners in exchange for his father; The viceroy declined the proposal and executed Don Leonardo Bravo to which the Rayo del Sur responded by handing over 300 Spanish prisoners to Bravo. José María Morelos, his superior, upon learning of the fatal fate of Don Leonardo Bravo, arranged for the prisoners to be executed in retaliation; but Bravo, giving an example of integrity and goodwill, proclaiming the phrase "You are released", set the prisoners completely free, but not before letting them know about the fate suffered by his father at the hands of of the viceroy; many of the prisoners, of their own accord, joined his forces, recognizing his generosity and greatness of soul. He pardoned 300 Spanish royalist prisoners on the spot in 1812, which is why his name was added to the municipality. On February 17, 1870, the limits between the municipalities of Medellín and Jamapa were established by decree.

In 1915, the first agrarian committee of the state of Veracruz and the first ejido, which was the ejido de Medellín, were founded in Medellín.
