He was also awarded four Golden Globes, two BAFTA Awards, a Grammy Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (6505 Hollywood Blvd.).

He was the father of electronic music musician Jean-Michel Jarre.

Biography

Maurice Jarre made his debut with the Renaud-Barralt company in 1946, forming a duo with Pierre Boulez (piano and ondes Martenot).

His career as a composer began in 1948, with the music for the show Le Gardien du Tombe, by Franz Kafka. A little later he became the musical director of the Théâtre National Populaire in Paris (1951-1963).

In 1952 he quickly became a popular and respected composer in France and the European continent thanks to his first film score Hôtel des Invalides.

Global recognition came a decade later, when he was hired to compose the soundtrack for David Lean's epic Lawrence of Arabia (1962), for which he won an Academy Award. best original soundtrack and that would become one of the most recognized movie themes of all time. His collaboration with Lean would also produce works such as the soundtracks for Doctor Zhivago (1965) and Passage to India (1984) (which earned him two more Oscars in the same year). category), as well as Ryan's Daughter (1970).

Among his soundtracks for other films include The Longest Day (1962), The Professionals (1966), Grand Prix (1966), Topaz (1969), The Judge of the Gallows (1972), The Man Who Would Be King (1975), The Message (1976), Jesus of Nazareth (1977), Witness (1985), The Mosquito Coast (1986), Fatal Attraction (1987), Gorillas in the Fog (1988), The Dead Poets Club (Dead Poets Society) (1989), Ghost (1990) and A walk in the clouds (1995).

Jarre wrote mainly for orchestras, but during the 1980s he began to try synthesized music. For this reason, he received some criticism that he did it more for comfort than for aesthetics. He himself denied it, pointing out that his work on Witness , for example, was more laborious than if it had been orchestral. Jarre's electronic soundtracks also include Fatal Attraction, The Year of Living Dangerously, There's No Way Out, Gorillas in the Mist, The Dead Poets Club (Dead Poets Society) and Jacob's Ladder. On several of these jobs he received advice from his son Jean Michel, a composer of electronic music.

In 2003, he announced his definitive retirement from film music composition.

On the occasion of the Berlin Film Festival in 2009, where he received a Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement, Jarre made his last public appearance. Victim of cancer, she died on March 29 of that same year in Los Angeles, United States.

He was the father of French electronic music composer Jean-Michel Jarre (born from his marriage to France Pejot), as well as Stefanie Jarre (with French actress Dany Saval) and American film screenwriter Kevin Jarre (adopted after his marriage to the American Laura Devon).
