Francisco Mateo Gil Rodríguez (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, September 23, 1972) is a Spanish screenwriter and film director. Co-writer of a large part of Amenábar's films, he won four Goya awards that he never came to collect. With a varied filmography, he is considered by critics as a solid and original director, capable of moving in different registers.

Biography

He was born on September 23, 1972 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Being the son of farmers, during his youth he worked as a waiter, encyclopedia seller and messenger.

With a special gift for artistic creation, he studied Information Sciences at the Complutense University, coinciding with Amenábar with whom he shared friendship and professional projects. She has collaborated many times with Alejandro Amenábar, being co-writer of many of his box office hits. Together they began in the world of cinema, Mateo being the author of the original idea for the film Tesis, Amenábar's debut film.

He began making and directing his own films in 1999, opening with Nobody knows anyone, an intrigue set during Easter, to continue with the western Blackthorn (2011). Applauded by critics and set in the Bolivian steppes about the legendary robber Butch Cassidy, it was performed by Sam Shepard. In 2017 he makes a leap into science fiction with Project Lazarus , a thriller about the first frozen and resurrected man. In 2018 he dares with a romantic comedy in the style of a documentary about quantum physics The laws of thermodynamics , set in Barcelona.
