Master formula
A master formula is a medicine intended for a specific patient, prepared by the pharmacist or under his direction, to expressly complement a detailed medical prescription of the medicinal substances it includes. It is made according to the technical and scientific standards of pharmaceutical art. It is dispensed in specific pharmacies and with the proper information to the user.
Pharmaceutical activity
Since the beginning of the XXI century, personalized therapy has been developed, in which the realization of magisterial formulas is the main exponent in Pharmaceutical Care and, often, the only treatment that can be accessed by patients with health problems classified as rare or whose treatment has been abandoned by the pharmaceutical industry due to lack of profitability. The preparation of the medication by the pharmacist avoids therapeutic marginalization.
The magisterial formulation is a highly technical activity, with enormous importance in the field of pharmacotherapy, and of great importance in the clinical field; especially for solving individual problems. It is a practice that is both traditional, due to its history linked to the origin of the pharmacy, and modern, due to the extent of its application in recent times. Its dissemination has not generated any conflict, except for the technical capacity to develop products with the required quality, and has offered important solutions in the field of pediatrics, dermatology, ophthalmology and geriatrics.
The main objective of the Spanish Society of Individualized Medication (Lasemi) is to promote Magistral Formulation among the profession and help the implementation and development of laboratories in Pharmacy Offices. LASEMI organizes scientific conferences and congresses around compounding with professionals from pharmacy, medicine, veterinary medicine, podiatry and physiotherapy, among others. It also promotes the publication of forms, which update and compile information on magisterial formulas in various areas of interest.
Numerous pharmacies throughout Spain belong to the Spanish Medicines Society and prepare and dispense formulas for patients.
