Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (known in Spain as Master and Commander: Al otro lado del mundo and Sea Captain and War: The Farthest Shore in the World in Spanish America) is a film based on the popular novels by Patrick O'Brian. The protagonist, Captain Jack Aubrey, known as 'Lucky Jack', is inspired by the life and exploits of Lord Thomas Cochrane, a British (Scottish) sailor who fought in the early 19th century in the Napoleonic and later he collaborated in the independence of Chile and Peru, also serving in the navies of Brazil and Greece.[citation required]
Plot
During the Napoleonic Wars the frigate HMS Surprise, a 28-gun fifth class, was ordered to follow the much larger 44-gun French privateer Acheron and built more recently, to the coasts of Brazil. Unexpectedly, the French ship attacks the Surprise, which causes considerable damage and some casualties. Despite the fact that his orders do not contemplate it, the English captain Aubrey (Russell Crowe) undertakes the pursuit of the & # 34; Acheron & # 34; skirting Cape Horn and sailing to the Galapagos Islands. There the two ships will face each other again, and Aubrey and his men will achieve victory by using a trap camouflaging the HMS Surprise as an English whaling ship, to attack the French ship by surprise (a technique taken from the mimicry observed by Aubrey, in the Galapagos Islands, in the specimens of insects collected by Dr. Stephen Maturín, his ship's doctor, a fan of botany and taxonomy.
In the original novel the "Acheron" is the North American frigate "USS Norfolk" (originally the action is located during the Anglo-American War of 1812), but the script had to be adapted to the demands of American taste. Taylor, author of a biography of Captain Edward Pellew, considers him one of the inspirations for Aubrey's fictional career and traits. There is no specific real-life captain who completely matches Aubrey, but the careers of two captains inspired events in the novels, Captain Thomas Cochrane, and Captain William Woolsey. Cochrane used the ruse of lighting candles on a floating raft to avoid capture from him. Woolsey, aboard HMS Papillon, disguised the ship under his command as a trading ship upon discovering information that an enemy ship was on the other side of a small island, he sailed around the island and captured the Spanish ship by this ploy., April 15, 1805.
