Biography

Born in the port city of Kobe, his real name is Masanori Ota. Masamune Shirow is nothing more than a pseudonym used to hide the persona from him. He studied at Osaka University and after graduating in art and oil painting he dedicated himself to teaching during the second half of the 1980s.

His professional career as a Mangaka began while he was still a student, when around 1982 he published a series of short stories in the fanzine Atlas that made him known throughout the world.[citation required]

In 1985 he published his first manga by the Seishinsha publishing house: Black Magic. In this first work, which already announced a rather complex author, Shirow already showed a particular interest in everything related to dystopias, technological development and the world of politics, as well as the mixture of magic and witchcraft with high technology.

In this same year he began the publication of his second work, the longest: Appleseed, under the same editorial but in a different magazine called Comic Gaia of the which has completed four volumes (1985 to 1989). This series is currently still unfinished after ten years have passed since the last volume, although he published two editions of the series called Appleseed Data Book and Appleseed Hiper Notes, which are not They are continuations of the work, but clarifications and expanded data on the series. An OVA was made in 1988, and a 3D movie was made in 2007, called Appleseed: The Beginning.

In 1986 Dominion was born, his most comical and futuristic work by the Hakusensha publishing house, in the Young Animal Arashi magazine. 4 OVAs were made in 1989, and 6 episodes in 1993 but under another name: New Dominion Tank Police, by the J.C.Staff studio.

In 1989 he created one of the most recognized works in the world, Ghost in the Shell, under the Kodansha publishing house. This manga definitely made him a cult author and one of the most respected professionals in the world of manga. It is a really extensive work of great quality comparable to works like Neuromancer.[citation required]

The manga Ghost in the Shell, of which 3 films and an anime series have been made to date: Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex followed by Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG and an OVA: Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Solid State Society, being one of the most expensive ever.

At the beginning of the 90s, in 1991, he created Orion, a religious mystical dalliance where you can see the differences and similarities between the Buddhist religion (the Japanese branch or Zen) and the Christian. In this work you can find a multitude of humorous details.

In 1992 his strangest work came out: Exon Depot. what the characters think and are supposed to say throughout some wonderful vignettes of extraordinary colour.[citation required]. It is itself a manga, but since it only contains illustrations, it can be considered more of a work of illustration than a manga itself.

In 1992 his first book of illustrations titled Intron Depot came out, where his color works were compiled with his airbrush technique that he would repeat in future works, although he already did so in the manga Ghost in the Shell and several others.

In 1995 he published a compilation volume Dominion tank police: conflict 1, by Seishinsha publishing house, in the Young Manga magazine.

In 1997 he published an anime for the manga-erotic magazine Kasshan Hunter and his second book of illustrations Intron Depot 2: Blades appeared on the market in 1998. His works They are also in the field of the world of computing and computer games, where he has designed the characters of Orion and Sampaguita.

Shirow has designed a future world where technological development has made man a machine and machine a man, where the border between human and artificial life is a fine line that no one can define.
