María de Borgoña (Brussels, Flanders, February 13, 1457-Bruges, March 27, 1482), Duchess of Burgundy, was the wife of Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, and mother of Felipe el Hermoso.

Biography

As the only daughter of the last Duke of Burgundy, Charles the Bold, and his second wife Isabel de Borbón, she inherited the dukedom from her father, at the age of 20, after his death at the Battle of Nancy. The French claim to the territories of the Netherlands caused King Louis XI to occupy the County of Burgundy or the Duchy of Burgundy itself, which prevented Mary from exercising her title in what had been her territories.
