History
The population origins of Martiago seem to date back to Vetonian or Roman times, since its name would be of Celtor-Roman origin according to the thesis of Llorente Maldonado and Barrios García. In any case, the Roman votive stone that appeared in the works of the Church of Martiago in 1950, as well as other Roman remains, would denote the existence of a population in the Roman era in the town, a fact that would be corroborated in the environment by the nearby existence of the Castro de Lerilla, inhabited in Vetonian and Roman times. Later, in the Middle Ages, Martiago was repopulated within the repopulation processes carried out in the area by the kings of León, being framed in the Campo de Agadones of the Diocese of Ciudad Rodrigo after its creation by the king Fernando II de León in the XII century. With the creation of the current provinces in 1833, Martiago was included in the of Salamanca, within the Leonese Region.
