Biography

He studied piano in childhood, but his first musical interest was in drums, which he began playing at the age of nine when he received a drum set for his birthday. He speaks 4 languages (Portuguese, English, French and Italian). Later he would learn to play the guitar. As a teenager, he studied lyrical singing and participated in a production of the musical Rocky Horror Show, staged by theater students from the Andrews School, and directed by Miguel Falabella. In 1985, when she came of age, she stayed in Italy for ten months to study singing, but gave up the lyrical genre and began singing Brazilian music, accompanied by several friends, in pubs and venues frequented by nightlife crowds. At that time, in Venice, she was heard by Nelson Motta, who would be the director of Tudo veludo , a show that would premiere in 1987 on the JazzMania channel, in Rio. The success was immediate, with the public and critics. Despite not having yet recorded her first album, she was considered one of the most promising voices in Brazilian popular music.

On Sunday, August 12, she was part of the group of Brazilian artists who welcomed the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at the closing ceremony of London 2012. She stood out for the beauty of her voice.

Musical career

Marisa Monte.

In 1988 he released his first album, MM (EMI). She highlighted her eclectic repertoire, which included a cover of George Gershwin's "Bess, You Is My Woman Now" and a reggae version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine."

The second album, Mais (1991), marked her debut as a composer and was well received in numerous countries such as the US, Japan and many in Europe and Latin America, boosting her international career. In addition to her own songs, on this album she performed some songs by famous Brazilian musicians such as Caetano Veloso, Arnaldo Antunes, and the late Cartola and Pixinguinha, among others.

The album Verde, Anil, Amarelo, Cor-de-Rosa e Carvão, released in 1994, had greater contribution and participation from well-known artists such as Gilberto Gil, Paulinho da Viola, Carlinhos Brown, Nando Reis (Titãs), Laurie Anderson and Naná Vasconcelos.

In 1996 he released Barulhinho Bom (A Great Noise), with two CDs, one with a live performance and the other with a video in which he appears with Os Novos Baianos, Arnaldo Antunes and Pastoras da Portela among others, and which includes scenes from the recording of the album. Later he published a book that contained his photos and his poetic and musical compositions.

He worked for a long time in the studios, with the collaboration and production of Arto Lindsay, to release in 2000 the album titled Memorias, Crónicas, e Declaracões de Amor. In 2002 he formed, together with Arnaldo Antunes and Carlinhos Brown, Tribalistas. The single "Já sei namorar" was number one on the main radio charts in both Brazil and many other countries.

After the birth of her first son Mano Wladimir in 2002, Marisa dedicated herself to two parallel and very different projects: a deep investigation of Rio samba and the creation of music with Carlinhos Brown, Arnaldo Antunes, Nando Reis, Adriana Calcanhotto, Marcelo Yuca and Seu Jorge, which concluded with the simultaneous release, in 2006, of "Universo ao Meu Redor", (with sambas by historical and contemporary composers) and "Infinito Particular" (with its new music and associations). Both had great popular and critical success, which led to a successful return to the stage after six years and a new international tour.

It is also worth highlighting among his compositions some others such as "Ainda lembro", "Ao meu redor" and "Aonde você mora?" (all three with Nando Reis); "Beija eu" (with Arnaldo Antunes and Arto Lindsay); and "E.C.T." and "Na estrada" (both with Nando Reis and Carlinhos Brown).

He has sold more than 15 million records worldwide.
