Mariano Barroso
Mariano Barroso Ayats (Barcelona, December 26, 1959) is a Spanish film director, screenwriter and producer; winner of three Goya Awards. He was also president of the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain (AACCE) from 2018 to 2022.
Training and teaching
He studied film directing at the American Film Institute and the Sundance Institute, and theater directing at the Teatro Español in Madrid and the William Layton Laboratory. He alternates film directing with his activity as a teacher. Among others, he has been head of the Directorship Chair of the Cuban Film School (EICTV), Director Coordinator at the Ciudad de la Luz Study Center and Director Coordinator at the Cinematography and Audiovisual School of the Community of Madrid, ECAM.
Filmography
In 1993 he directed and co-wrote his first feature film My soul brother, starring Juanjo Puigcorbé, Carlos Hipólito and Lydia Bosch. The film premiered at the Berlin Festival and received the Goya awards for best new director, the Sant Jordi award, and the Crystal Globe at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, among others.
In 1994, he directed the film Lucrecia for Antena 3, starring Carmen Elías, Jaume Valls, Pepe Sancho and Juan Diego Botto, among others. Ecstasy (1995), starring Javier Bardem and Federico Luppiloe presented at the Berlin Festival, later at those in London, Washington, etc., and received the award for best film of the year from the New York Entertainment Critics Association. In 1999 she directed and co-produced Los lobos de Washington , starring Javier Bardem and Eduard Fernández. The film receives awards for best direction and performance at the Toulouse Film Festival and several nominations.
In 2000 he directed Kasbah, starring Ernesto Alterio, Natalia Verbeke and José Sancho. In 2001 she directed In the Time of the Butterflies for North American TV, produced by MGM and Showtime and starring Salma Hayek, Marc Anthony, Edward J. Olmos and Mia Maestro. In 2005 she directed Hormigas en la boca , with Eduard Fernández, Ariadna Gil and Jorge Perugorría. He receives the Special Jury and Best Actor awards at the Malaga Festival.
In 2007 he directed one of the episodes of Invisibles, produced by Javier Bardem and Doctors Without Borders. He received the Goya Award for best documentary. In 2012 he premiered Lo mejor de Eva, starring Leonor Watling and Miguel Ángel Silvestre.
In 2013 he directed and co-wrote Todas las mujeres, starring Eduard Fernández, Nathalie Poza, Petra Martínez, María Morales, Marta Larralde, Lucía Quintana and Michelle Jenner. The film received the Goya Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, the Best Film Award from Días de Cine, and its protagonist has been recognized with numerous awards.
In January 2018, he shot for Movistar+ the series El día de mañana based on the novel of the same name by Ignacio Martínez de Pisón and starring Oriol Pla, Aura Garrido, Jesús Carroza, etc. In 2019, Criminal, Spainñana for Netflix, with Emma Suárez, Carmen Machi, Eduard Fernández, etc. And for Movistar+, The invisible line, with Antonio de la Torre, Alex Monner, Asier Etxeandía, etc.

Career at AACCE
At the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences, he was first vice president during the presidency of Yvonne Blake (2016-2018) and acting president (April 9-June 9, 2018). June 2018, after being elected and ratified in early elections, he is the president of the AACCE.
