Maria-sama ga Miteru (マリア様 がみてる, ''Maria-sama ga Miteru'' ? in Spanish “María is watching”), also known informally as Marimite (マリみて, 'Marimite'?), is a Japanese shōjo light novel series within the drama, comedy, and romance yuri genres, originally created in February 1997 by Oyuki Konno e Illustrated by Reine Hibiki.

Initially conceived as a short story within the Cobalt magazine, due to its success it became a novel series that spanned thirty-nine volumes, from 1998 to 2012.

The argument is realistic. In the story, the female characters and the austerity of the environment have a strong presence. Its plot is slow-paced and focused on the relationships of the characters; the latter has been associated with the lesbianism of some characters, which consists of an idealized love.

Historical overview

In February 1997, Oyuki Konno, a Japanese novelist who had already written a few works and had won awards in 1993 for the Yume no Miya novel series, published in Cobalt magazine. a short story called Maria-sama ga Miteru, about the experiences of high school students in an austere and elegant school called Lillian College for Girls. The success of said story within the magazine led Konno to launch her story apart from her as a new novel series.

Thus, on May 10, 1998, he published the first volume of the novel María-sama ga Miteru, with the help of Hibiki Reine, a shōjo cartoonist, to design the complementary illustrations. Of the characters. This volume is the true start of the series (the original 1997 story was reinserted in the ninth volume, in 2001). In February 2003, with more than twelve volumes published, Oyuki resumed, parallel to the novel, the publication of the short stories of said series in Cobalt magazine, and at the end of that same year the publication was announced. adaptation of the novel to Japanese television as an anime in a season of thirteen chapters from January 2004 to March 2004, with the help of Studio DEEN; Likewise, in parallel in February 2004, the manga adaptation was launched with the drawings of Satoru Nagasawa.

Given the success of the first season of the anime series and the fact that this season only covered up to the sixth volume, it was decided to release the second anime season for television between July and September of that same year, with thirteen chapters and with the same staff that worked on the first season; said season would reach volume eleven of the novel. Additionally, in 2004 the series began to take on a more commercial character with the publication of CD dramas of the series, using the same voice actors from the anime series as voices. Also in that year, an omake was released that appeared on the DVDs of the anime series called Maria-sama ni wa Naisho (マリア様にはないしょ, 'Maria-sama ni wa Naisho'? Don't tell the Virgin Mary) and that it was a short animated parody of the anime series; additionally in 2004 the soundtracks of the two seasons were published with the help of the musical duo ALI PROJECT.

In 2005 the author continued to publish more novel volumes, more short stories, drama CDs, and new manga volumes. In that year she continued with the release of more commercial products such as three Image Album CDs (unreleased songs that did not come out as OST) and various merchandise. At the end of that year, the Proyecto María 2006 was announced, and it would encompass the release of more collectible products, public events, and the presentation of the third anime season in July 2006.

Thus, at the beginning of 2006, Internet radio broadcasts were released, where the protagonists are the main voice actors of the anime series and said broadcasts were comments about the novelties of the series and other comic situations outside of the main plot of the novel. Some of these presentations were made with the public at various convention events. In August of this year, the third anime season was finally announced, this time presented in OVA format and which would be historically located after the second season, and with the same cast of voice actors; this OVA series aired between November 2006 and July 2007.

This series was little known outside of Japan. However, the novel series has been officially licensed and translated in South Korea and Germany. In May 2006 it was officially announced that the anime series had been licensed in Spain for dubbing by Jonu Media and was released to DVD sale in that country in April 2008 and was broadcast by the Buzz channel. In Latin America this series has not been licensed in any way.

The August 2007 issue of Cobalt magazine announced the fourth animated season of the series; however, it had not been initially revealed if it was going to be presented on television or through an OVA. Finally, in January 2008 it was announced that said season would be televised in January 2009.

In parallel, since August 2008, a story spin-off of the original series called Oshaka-sama mo Miteru (お釈迦様もみてる, 'Oshaka-sama mo Miteru'? literally "Buddha is also looking at us"), which tells the story of the students of Hanadera College, a college private for men that appeared in the original series. Its protagonist is Yuki Fukuzawa, brother of Yumi Fukuzawa, protagonist of the main plot. So far only one volume has been published in light novel format.

Plot

This series focuses on the experiences of the students of the Lillian Private School for Ladies, especially the student council of said school, called Yamayurikai. It can be considered a series in which many characters are focused, especially in the mutual relationships that they have, closely related to the fraternal relationship, in the development of the story. A peculiarity is that this series uses various terms from Catholicism, botany and the French language; in fact, in the series it is subtitled in French as La Vierge Marie vous regarde, (The Virgin Mary is watching us).

The school, according to the series, was founded in 1901 in the town of Musashino, near Tokyo. It is considered as an elegant, neat and prestigious Catholic school within Japan; the students and graduates are highly respected and have a good social position; respect for the school is such that generations of women from the same family have attended Lillian. At school, a tradition is applied in high school based on the senpai and kōhai system, although more formal, called the "sœur system. " (sœur, French for "sister"), in which a high school sophomore or junior named grande sœur (older sister), gives her rosary to a student one year younger called petite sœur (younger sister) (if the "grande sœur" is in If you are a sophomore, you must give your rosary to a freshman; if you are a junior, you may give your rosary to a sophomore or freshman).

The story also offers elements of romance or hints of romance in the development of the sœur relationships of some characters (this series has been classified apart from shōjo as a yuri series, but not a formal relationship lesbian dominated with physical facts but with platonic relationships); also the persistent use of flowers, especially the rose and the lily that have influenced history; in fact yuri in Japanese means lily and the lily is the flower that represents the Virgin Mary, since the lily is designated in Catholicism as a symbol of purity and virginity, and this purity is associated with Yamayurikai and with the Lillian College, from which they take their name from the lily (the first in Japanese and the second from Latin lilium).

With these characteristics combined in the plot, it is somewhat reminiscent of other old series of the same genre such as Oniisama e... or Shōjo Kakumei Utena, but perhaps without the persistence of a love relationship as a central theme, without losing the elegance and austerity of the story and the characters.

The series unfolds with very natural and almost life-like events, with real-life environments and locations. Likewise, this series has a dramatic plot from which unreal or supernatural situations are not expected, as in many other anime series, specifically the magical type. Additionally, most of the characters are connected in some way with the school (either study at said school or graduated from it or are related to a student), thus giving this location a central point of the entire series.

So far, the novel has spanned more than two years from Yumi Fukuzawa, the main protagonist, entering her first year of high school at Lillian College and her first contact with Sachiko Ogasawara, a sophomore; who at first only admired her because of her popularity and later became her onee-sama. In this story, Yumi enters the exclusive and restricted world of the Yamayurikai and its members, and later becomes the center of attention of both the council and the rest of the College due to her intricate and common personality.

Terms used in the novel

As explained before, special words are used in this series, especially some borrowed from French:

Lillian College

The Lillian Private College for Girls (私立リリアン女学園 , Shiritsu Ririan Jogakuen ?) is the main setting of the whole story. It is a private Catholic school and where only women study. Founded, according to the novel, in 1901 (year 34 of the Meiji Era) in the town of Musashino in Tokyo, it is a complete educational center (that is, it has from kindergartens to a University and offers up to eighteen years of complete education) and is administered by a mission of nuns.

Initially it was a school where the daughters of noblemen studied. At present it is a school where the daughters of wealthy families study. The model school from which the novel may have been inspired was Musashino College for Girls (武蔵野女子学院高等学校 , Musashino Joshi-Gakuin Kōtōgakkō?); in fact, Lillian College was based on the Musashino Joshi-Gakuin College. However, it does not have the facilities of being a Catholic school or offering continuing education.

Among the facilities of Colegio Lillian, apart from the classrooms, there are a church, a greenhouse, a kendō dōjō, an auditorium, a park, and the Mansion of Roses. It is characteristic that the students have good conduct and good manners; added to the simplicity of his long dark green sailor fuku uniform.

Sure

The sœur system (スール, sūru? , in French, "sister") is a tradition applied at Lillian College High School; is a very popular and famous tradition in school, comparable to senpai and kohai, but has more sentimental undertones in the form of "twinning" among the students.

A sophomore or junior must choose a junior in high school, with the latter's consent, to formalize the relationship. The ceremony is performed by presenting the rosary of the grand sister to her chosen one, making an oath or promise; and automatically it will be hers petite sœur of hers. The relationship will last until the grande sœur graduates from high school or until one of the two students is dissatisfied with her sœur and ends up returning the rosary, there may be reconciliation between them if the latter occurs (as with Rei and Yoshino). There may also be the case of second-year students who can be petite sœur to a third-year student and be grande sœur to a first-year student.

With this successive transfer of the sœur relationship each year, it maintains the line of tradition through time, especially with the succession of the Roses. Much has been said about this relationship in the novel, since this twinning can create an "intimate connection" between an older and younger student during their school life, in some students this relationship may be a mere school formality, in others a good friendship and on very rare occasions, an expression of love and courtship. This tradition is not mandatory for all students, there are cases of students who do not have a sister relationship (for example, Katsura).

This term should not be confused with the Catholic nuns, who work in said school, also called "sisters", but in Japanese they are called otherwise (シスター shisutā; from English "sister").

Terms related to the sœur system

  • Petite sœur (, imōto; ♫♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪, peti-sūru). Literally, "small sister" in French. She is part of the Yamayurikai and will probably be a Rose in the next term, unless some student outside the Yamayurikai wants to aspire for Rose by voting. She must be of a lower school grade than her onee-sama and usually performs the activities that the Roses decide, as an assistant; she also holds the position of her for one school year.

Rose on bouton petite sœur

The rose en bouton petite sœur (薔薇のつぼみの妹, Rosa no tsubomi no imōto; ロサ・アン・ブゥトン・プティ・スール, rosa an būton puti sūru; literally, younger sister of the rose bud) is the petite sœur of a rose en bouton; they also take the name of the species of rose their onee-sama has, that is, Rosa Chinensis en bouton petite sœur (ロサ ・キネンシス・アン・ブゥトン プティ・スール, Rosa Kinenshisu an Būton Puti Sūru;薇のつぼみの妹 , Benibara no Tsubomi no Imōto), Rosa Gigantea en bouton petite sœur (ロサ ・ギガンティア・アン・ブゥトン プティ・スール, Rosa Gigantia an Būton Puti Sūru;薇のつぼみの妹 , Shirobara no Tsubomi no Imōto) and Rosa Fœtida en bouton petite sœur (ロサ ・フェティダ・アン・ブゥトン プティ・スール, Rosa Fetida an Būton Puti Sūru;のつぼみの妹 , Kibara no Tsubomi no Imōto).

She must be in a lower school grade than her onee-sama and performs minor activities as an assistant to the Roses en bouton and also takes care of cleaning and other services (such as serving tea and snacks) inside the Yamayurikai. She holds this position for one school year and the following year she automatically becomes rosa en bouton .

Composition of the Yamayurikai

Each year the Yamayurikai renews positions during the beginning of each school year and ends with the graduation of the Roses; although there may be special exceptions such as the termination of a sister relationship. Below are the charges as of the beginning of the story.

Year 1

In the first year of the story (from volumes 1 to 19), the composition of the council was as follows:

FœtidaChinensisGigantea
RosaEriko Torii (3. year) Yōko Mizuno (3. year) Sei Satō (3. year)
Rosa ~ in boutonRei Hasekura (2th year) Sachiko Ogasawara (2nd year) Shimako Tōdō (1. year)
Rosa ~ in bouton petite sœurYoshino Shimazu (1. year) Yumi Fukuzawa (1. year) None1

Note:

¹ Because Sei did not choose petite sœur in the previous year due to the problem with Shiori Kubō, he had to wait for the following year to choose Shimako, who was in his first year.

Year 2

In the second year now that Yōko, Sei and Eriko have graduated, the council is formed as follows (from volume 19 to 35):

FœtidaChinensisGigantea3
RosaRei Hasekura (3. year) Sachiko Ogasawara (3. year) Shimako Tōdō (2nd year)
Rosa ~ in boutonYoshino Shimazu (2nd year) Yumi Fukuzawa (2nd year) Noriko Nijō (1. year)
Rosa ~ in bouton petite sœurNana Arima (3. high school year)1 Tōko Matsudaira (1. year)2 None

Notes:

¹ She was chosen as petite sœur by accident, when Yoshino thought she was in high school, but she is still in her third year of middle school and must at least make it to her first year of high school to be in the Yamayurikai.

² Until volume 31 of the novel, Bara no Hana Kanmuri, Yumi did not possess petite sœur and there was a dispute between Kanako Hosokawa and Tōko Matsudaira. In that volume, Tōko asks Yumi for her rosary and she becomes her petite sœur.

³ Due to Sei's problem, the position of Rosa Gigantea en bouton petite sœur was still abolished this year, and in the following year the position is restored because Noriko will be in her 2nd year. This means that both Shimako and Noriko are Rosa Gigantea and Rosa Gigantea en bouton for two years, instead of one year traditionally.

Year 3

In the third year Sachiko and Rei graduate (volume 35), so the Yamayurikai is composed as follows:

FœtidaChinensisGigantea
RosaYoshino Shimazu (3. year) Yumi Fukuzawa (3. year) Shimako Tōdō (3. year)
Rosa ~ in boutonNana Arima (1. year) Tōko Matsudaira (2nd year) Noriko Nijō (2nd year)
Rosa ~ in bouton petite sœur-

They were hosted by Kana Ueda (Yumi's seiyū), although some seiyū of the series occasionally appeared as guests.

A second season began airing on August 27, 2008 on the same channel on a monthly basis. Additionally, this season two specials were presented, one for autumn (September 14, 2008) and one for Christmas (December 24, 2008).

Others

With a more commercial and less argumentative nature, some merchandise and collectibles have been presented in a special way. Figurines, posters, letters, buttons, dolls among other objects are shown for sale from time to time.

Fandom

Due to the multiple relationships between the characters in the series, many fans of the series have created various media such as dōjinshis, fanarts, fanfics, parodies, even other series have been inspired by the plot of the series.

Something that has characterized the fans is the identification of the characters with some of their characteristics, in many fanarts Yumi is shown as a raccoon, Yoshino as a cat and Shimako as a rabbit; or in some parodies exaggerating Kanako's size or attributing Tōko's hairstyle with real drills. On other occasions, fans show more unusual and intimate situations between the characters, sometimes showing more explicit relationships than in the series.

Dōjin Games

Although the series has not officially presented video games, there are several dōjin games based on the series, among which are: Maribato! (made by DK-Soft), Rosa Chinesis Four Hand and Lilian Fourhand: Nuclear Sœur the Fighter (both made by French Bread.)

Other based works

Since the appearance of Maria-sama ga Miteru, other anime, manga and video game series have appeared with a similar plot of private schools with a complex sorority system with student councils with fancy names, some of these being Strawberry Panic! and Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru. An unofficial pornographic film was also made with real characters dressed in cosplay embodying the characters from the series, based on the original story and entitled Maria-sama ga Mitei ru (with an additional I).
