Marcos Valério

Marcos Valério Fernandes de Souza is a Brazilian businessman in the advertising industry, nationally known for his involvement in the monthly payments scandal. He is the owner of two communication agencies: ADN and SMP&B.
Valério became quite well known during the political crisis at the beginning of June, when deputy Roberto Jefferson (PTB-RJ) made his initial statements about a monthly payment scheme for Brazilian deputies.
He is accused of being the main operator of the monthly payment scheme. According to Jefferson, in an exclusive interview with the Brazilian newspaper Folha de São Paulo, Valério helped the PT treasurer, Delúbio Soares, in the distribution of monthly payments of R$ 30 thousand to deputies from other parties of the allied base. That money from state and private companies arrived in "suitcases" Brasilia and was then distributed. Initially, the advertising man denied the accusations, classifying them as "unfounded, full of fantasy and apparently produced by folly, desperation and cynicism."
Fernanda Karina Somaggio, a former secretary who worked with the accused between 2003 and 2004, said that Valério maintains frequent contacts with parliamentarians and members of the PT.
Marcos Valério until then denied having any financial involvement with President Lula's party. The businessman confirmed, however, that he had a close relationship with the PT treasurer, Delúbio Soares.
"I never denied that I am very, very close to Delúbio. I am from the interior, I kill it. Delúbio is Goian, a killer bug too."
In 2004, the second year of President Lula's government, ADN and SMP&B increased their profits in official contracts. Valério had the value of an increased contract, expired two new accounts, at the Post Office and in the Chamber of Deputies, and managed to extend four other old contracts.
Their companies won nearly R$ 150 million in contracts with five state and executive bodies, in addition to the Chamber of Deputies. If long-term projects are also evaluated, he tells 'Vea', the total of Valério's businesses together with the government can reach R$ 400 million.
Marcos Valério has simple origins. In 1997, his declared assets did not exceed 400 thousand reais. In 2005, his declared assets were more than 16 million reais, which fueled suspicions of illicit enrichment. His assets have quadrupled since President Lula took office in 2003.
