In the Gregorian calendar, March is the third month of the year and has 31 days. Its name derives from the Latin Martius, which was the first month of the Roman calendar. Martius in turn derives from Mars, the name in Latin for Mars, Roman god of war.
During March, around the 20th or 21st (depending on the year), one of the two equinoxes of the year occurs. This is the vernal equinox in the northern hemisphere and the autumnal equinox for the southern hemisphere.
For the Catholic Church, this month is dedicated to Saint Joseph of Nazareth.
