Manmohan Singh (26 September 1932) is an Indian politician of the Congress Party, who served as the 14th Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014.

Biography

He became president of the Indian government following the victory in the 2004 elections of the coalition led by the Congress Party. She took office after the president of this formation Sonia Gandhi, widow of Rajiv Gandhi, a political leader assassinated in 1991, resigned from holding it, due to criticism received from certain political sectors for being of foreign origin (Italian by birth)..

Prior to his presidency, Singh was appointed by the IMF to be India's Finance Minister in 1991, a post he held until 1996. He is considered the architect of India's economic reform program in the 1990s. It was under his leadership, as Finance Minister in the Rao government (1991-1996), that a program of economic liberalization was introduced. Although his economic reforms were popular with the upper and middle classes (but much less so with poor and nationalist circles), he lost the Lok Sabha election for a South Delhi constituency in 1999.

In 2009, he launched Operation Green Hunt against Naxalite rebels, whom he described as "the biggest threat to the country's internal security." At the same time, the government is facing a growing protest against a neoliberal model that is accompanied by serious human rights violations.

On 16 May 2014, Singh resigned before the end of his term after losing his Indian National Congress party in the general election to Narendra Modi, but remained in office until Modi's inauguration.
