The settlement was built in June 1953 in Vlakfontein, after which the new neighborhood was originally named, and was intended only for black inhabitants. Initially there were just 16 houses built for blacks who had been expelled from their neighborhoods under the "Group Areas Act" (Group Areas Act).
The name y#34;Mamelodi#34; It means Mother of Melodies, derived from the nickname that black people gave to President Paul Kruger for his ability to whistle and imitate birds.
In the 1960s, black Tshwane residents were forced to leave the city and settle in nearby suburbs such as Mamelodi, Ga-Rankuwa, Soshanguve and Atteridgeville due to the Apartheid political system. The number of inhabitants is approximately 1,000,000 people.
Mamelodi is sometimes called the home of jazz, not only because of the number of great jazz artists it has produced, but also because it has hosted many festivals in its Moretele Park.
