Mall Florida Center
Mall Florida Center is a shopping center located in the commune of La Florida, in Santiago de Chile. It is owned by the Cencosud holding company, also owner of the Alto Las Condes, Costanera Center shopping centers and the Mall Portal chain.
Inaugurated in September 2003, it emerged as the second major mall present in the commune, and is a direct competitor of Mallplaza Vespucio, located less than two kilometers from the present. In December 2018, the mall was renamed Mall Portal Florida Center, as a way to enhance the identity of the Mall Portal chain, although it later recovered its original name.
Structure and distribution
It is located in an area of more than 210 thousand square meters, with more than 300 thousand square meters of commercial area built. The building consists of four floors for the public plus five levels of parking (3 in height and 2 in the basement). The structure has on its sides the so-called 'anchor stores', which are the largest department or major stores: the Jumbo hypermarket to the north, the Easy homecenter to the east, the Ripley and Paris department stores to the west, and to the south the La Polar department store. Subsequently, a Tricot store was inaugurated, located on the third level, so now it has five department stores.
This shopping center was also the birthplace of the first Tommy Beans, which was born independently in 2006 in its food court. Currently, that restaurant belongs to the Chilean holding company G&N Brands.
After almost 20 years of hegemony of the Mallplaza Vespucio, the Florida Center was able to capture a significant percentage of the visits made to the latter. It has more than 200 stores. Inside it has a large central plaza, the Plaza de la Tierra on whose floor there is, in mosaic, a map of South America with Chile highlighted and a red dot over the capital Santiago de Chile. There are also the Water and Air Squares. It has a complex of 14 movie theaters (3,200 seats).
It has direct access ramps from the Mirador station on Line 5 of the Santiago Metro, two panoramic elevators, wide hallways and easy circulation, in addition to 5,500 parking spaces.
In April 2023, Cencosud announced the first major expansion of the Mall Florida Center, seeking to increase the total leasable area by 23,000 square meters. The project includes 30 new stores, an open-air dining area, a theater and a performance center.
