The national flag of Malaysia was adopted on September 16, 1963.

Design

Its design is very similar to the United States Flag, although it was probably not intended to imitate it but to recall the flag of the British East India Company, which also seems to have inspired the American one. The Malaysian flag features equal-sized horizontal stripes of red and white and a blue quadrant in the canton. The red and white stripes number fourteen and symbolize the thirteen Malay Federated States and the Malay Federation. In the canton there is a decreasing, an Islamic symbol, and a fourteen-pointed star (Venus) that represents, like the stripes, the Malay states and the federation they form. Both the crescent and the star are yellow, a symbol of the Malaysian monarchy and appear at the top of the national coat of arms.

On August 31, 1997, Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohammad approved giving the flag a name, Jalur Gemilang, "Glorious Stripes& #3. 4;.
