Makoto Shishio is one of the characters in the manga and anime Rurouni Kenshin, being recognized as one of the main antagonists that appeared. He was born on August 7, 1846 and died on May 25, 1876 in battle against Kenshin.

Character biography

After working as a piece-breaker for Ishin Shishi, the new Meiji government attempted to kill Shishio by dousing him with oil and burning him alive. However, Shishio manages to survive and recruits an army led by Juppongatana to take revenge and wipe out Japan. With members of the government fearing his death, they recruit both Kenshin and former Shinsengumi Saito Hajime to defeat his forces.

Anime

In addition to the manga, Shishio has appeared in the anime adaptation of the series, games, and two live-action films. He is also the protagonist of the prequel manga Rurouni Kenshin: Master of Flame, which shows the origins of Juppongatana. Watsuki was inspired by the Shinsengumi Serizawa Kamoin to create the character, while SNK's characters from the fighting games Samurai Shodown served as the main influence for his design. Watsuki intended to portray Shishio as a ruthless and unforgiving antagonist by making him 'evil'; due to his actions. In the Japanese anime, Masanori Ikeda voices the character with various members taking on the role in multiple English adaptations. He was portrayed by Tatsuya Fujiwara in the live-action movies.

Reception

Critical reception of Shishio's character has been positive due to his villainous traits and the powers he displays throughout the Kyoto arc. Because Shishio is so powerful, the writers were divided that his downfall was a dodge, but still appreciated him for the way he affects other characters. Fujiwara's performance was the subject of praise.
