The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) (Majority Society Party) (Hindi: बहुजन समाज पार्टी) is a national socialist political party in India. It was formed to primarily represent the Bahujans (literally meaning 'People of the Majority'), referring to people from low castes, Dalits and other castes; as well as the Buddhists. The party claims that it is inspired by the philosophy of B. R. Ambedkar. The BSP was founded by charismatic leader Kanshi Ram in 1984. The party's political symbol is an elephant. In the 13th Lok Sabha (Lower House) term from 1999 to 2004 the BSP had 14 members out of a possible 545 and in the 15th Lok Sabha term it reached 21 members. The BSP is headquartered in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, where it has formed a government on several occasions.

Mayawati, has been the national Chairman of the BSP since 2003. The deep and reciprocal hostility between the BSP and the Samajwadi Party, the counterpart of the leadership in Uttar Pradesh, whose components are drawn mostly from the Other Backward Class (Other lower classes) - has led the BSP to ally themselves many times with parties they were at odds with, such as the Bharatiya Janata Party. On June 23, 2008, the party withdrew its support for the United Progressive Alliance coalition in Congress.

The BSP has recently been embroiled in controversy over its leader, given Mayawati's attitude towards building statues of himself, political mentor Kanshi Ram and B.R. Ambedkar in the cities of Lucknow and Noida. And it has also been criticized for its constant change in terms of political alliances.

Uttah Pradesh Assembly Election 2007

On 11 May 2007, in the Uttar Pradesh state assembly elections the BSP emerged as the party with the majority in the assembly, the first in fifteen years since 1991. BSP Chairman Ms. Mayawati began her fourth term as Head of Government of Uttar Pradesh and was sworn in along with 50 cabinet ministers, in Rajbhawan, the state capital of Lucknow.

The Majority Society Party is currently the third largest party in India, with more than 10% of the vote nationwide.

Secret successor to Mayawati

On August 9, 2003, Mayawati stated that she had chosen a successor from the "chamar community" and he is about 18-20 years younger than her. Her name remains written on a sealed package to the left, guarded by two of her closest confidantes. The name of the successor will be disclosed on the day of her death.
