Contenido Madagascar had been divided into six provinces since 1946, but in 2004 a new division of the island into 22 regions (faritra) was approved. These regions became the highest administrative level with the dissolution of the previous provinces following a referendum held in 2007. The new regions are further subdivided into 119 districts, 1,579 communes and 17,485 fokontany.
