Luxembourg Grand Prix
The Luxembourg Grand Prix was an automobile race that took place in 1997 and 1998 at the Nürburgring circuit valid for the Formula 1 world championship.
Although the FIA statutes state that there can only be one race per country in the Formula 1 World Championship[citation needed], the FIA does not follow this rule to the letter and for many years two races have been held in Germany, Italy, and Spain, giving them a different name to the second of the races. This is how the Luxembourg Grand Prix was created, which was held only between 1997 and 1998, in order to give a different name to the race held at the Nürburgring circuit, which had previously been called the European Grand Prix. That year, the European Grand Prix was held in Spain.
Between 1949 and 1952, the Luxembourg Grand Prix was held in Findel but was not a Formula 1 event.
The 1997 Luxembourg Grand Prix was memorable for the superiority shown by the Renault engines which achieved the top four positions, the winner being Jacques Villeneuve driving for Williams-Renault.
