Lunahuana District
The district of Lunahuaná is one of the sixteen that make up the province of Cañete, located in the department of Lima in Peru.
Within the ecclesiastical division of the Catholic Church of Peru, it belongs to the Prelature of Yauyos
History
Inca times
The advance of the Incas was very strong from the mountains to the coast, which they were conquering. But in the current Cañete the Señorío de Los Huarcos was established, who resisted the Inca conquest. Túpac Yupanqui ordered the construction of his headquarters, the Inkawasi, in present-day Lunahuaná.
District
The district of Lunahuaná was created at the time of independence by Supreme Decree of August 4, 1821, by the Liberator José de San Martín. Republican life began with eight other districts of the Province of Cañete, which also included Chilca, Mala, San Vicente, Pacarán, Chincha Alta, Chincha Baja and Coayllo.
Its capital, Lunahuaná, known since independence as "La Villa de Lunahuaná" was declared in 1994 tourist and cultural capital of the province of Cañete.
Toponymy
The name of the district comes from southern Quechua:
- Runa = Man (with the arrival of the Spaniards became "Moon", case similar to what happened with the name of Lima)
- Huanac = Scarment
- Runa Huanac = The one who mocks men
The reason for the name is that, according to some chroniclers, the area was the scene of blows given to those who resisted the Inca power and conquest, after the arrival of Pachacútec. The name of the district is born thanks to these facts.
