Moon (ルナ Runa?) is a character that appears in the manga and anime Sailor Moon. She is a dark purple cat who can talk and always accompanies the protagonist, Usagi Tsukino. In front of other people as well as Usagi's own family, however, she pretends to be an ordinary cat. She has a yellow crescent-shaped mark on her forehead. In the anime her eyes are red or brown, while in the manga they are blue.

Luna, Usagi Tsukino's cat, comes from an ancient kingdom on the Moon called the Silver Millennium; She therefore can speak, she possesses human intelligence and other unusual abilities. It is she who informs Usagi that her destiny is to protect the world and fight evil. For this she gives her the first transformation brooch, with which she can become the protagonist heroine of the series, 'Sailor Moon'. Under the guise of this warrior, Usagi gains supernatural powers to fight evil by following Luna's advice.

After this, the two find Ami, Rei and Makoto; three other girls to whom Luna gives transformation feathers to become the vigilantes Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars and Sailor Jupiter. These join Sailor Moon in her fight against the villains. Shortly after, a new girl with the ability to transform into a vigilante appears and joins the group: she is Minako, alias Sailor Venus; she whose transformation feather was given to her by Artemis. Artemis is a white cat who also comes from the Silver Millennium, and is also an old companion of Luna.

Finally, Artemis and Luna reveal to the girls that they are a type of warrior known as the Sailor Senshi, the only ones who can use their respective transformation feathers, become vigilantes and have their powers. Therefore they are the only ones who can fight against the evil beings that threaten the Earth.

Luna and Artemis have a daughter, Diana. The names of the three cats have clear references to the Moon. The name Moon refers to the Earth's natural satellite and the Roman name of the goddess Selene. The names Artemis and Diana referring to the Greek and Roman lunar goddesses respectively.

Background

Luna appears for the first time in the entire first act or episode of each adaptation of the series. She and Artemis are the only survivors of an ancient kingdom on the moon, known as the Silver Millennium. There, according to the first anime, Luna was the advisor to the kingdom's ruler, Queen Serenity. According to the manga and Sailor Moon Crystal, however, she served the queen's only daughter and heir, Princess Serenity, whom she had sworn never to abandon. When the kingdom was destroyed, she and Artemis were put into a long, deep sleep and sent to the planet Earth, where Princess Serenity and her guardians, the Sailor Senshi, would finally be reincarnated. When they finally awaken in the XX century, they discover that Queen Beryl and the Shitennō, ancient villains who had destroyed the Kingdom of the Moon, have also returned and intend to take over the planet. Therefore Luna and Artemis begin to search for the reincarnations of Princess Serenity and the Sailor Senshi, so that together they can definitively defeat these villains.

At first, Luna only knows that she must find the Sailor Senshi, the princess and the Silver Crystal. She first finds Usagi Tsukino and trains her to fight evil under the guise of a vigilante called "Sailor Moon." He does this without knowing that Usagi is not only a Sailor Senshi but also the reincarnation of the kingdom's own heir, Princess Serenity. This is because Luna's memory was partially suppressed as part of a strategy to hide the Princess's new identity, and thus mislead the enemy.

Finally, Luna and Artemis manage to reunite Sailor Moon with the other Sailor Senshi and they defeat Queen Beryl and her allies. After this, new enemies appear. As the series progresses, Usagi's future daughter, Chibiusa, who comes from the future, appears. She brings with her Diana, future daughter of Artemis and Luna. Other vigilantes are also being added who obtain their transformation brooches by other means. Among them are Haruka (Sailor Uranus), Michiru (Sailor Neptune), Setsuna (Sailor Plut) and Hotaru (Sailor Saturn). In all of these situations, the three cats, Luna, Artemis, and their daughter Diana, act as guides and advisors to the Sailor Senshi.

Only in the manga version, it is revealed that both Luna and Artemis are not originally from the Solar System, but rather came to the Silver Millennium for the first time in ancient times, from their home planet, Mau; the same one Sailor Tin Nyanko comes from.

During the fifth and final season of the first anime, Luna briefly feels a slight attraction towards Yaten, one of the Three Lights, but this does not develop because he ends up returning to his home planet.

Profile

Although they themselves are not warriors nor do they possess vigilante skills; Luna, Artemis, and Diana often advise Sailor Moon and her friends, helping them discover the identity and plans of each new villain. Often they are also the ones who give them new weapons and items to fight, or who help them obtain them. Objects sometimes appear out of nowhere and it is unclear if they, especially Luna, are the ones who created them or if they simply brought them with them from somewhere else. Sometimes they assist in combat by distracting the enemy.

Only in the manga, in the first season, Luna is able to send strong energy and light attacks towards opponents, to stop them when they are about to hurt the Sailor Senshi. Additionally, she and Artemis are capable of transporting themselves to the moon. In the second season of the manga, when analyzing the fragments of the Dark Crystal that have been taken from the Black Moon group, Luna and Artemis manipulate these pieces through a slight power of telekinesis.

Luna has an implicit romantic relationship with Artemis, which is confirmed when they meet Diana, her daughter from the future. On the other hand, each of the cats in turn has a very special bond with a specific Sailor Senshi, whom she always accompanies and helps above all else. While Artemis does this for Minako (Sailor Venus) and Diana for Chibiusa, in Luna's case she is always dedicated to accompanying and supporting Usagi. During the course of the series, Luna forms a very close bond with her; although at first their relationship is a little difficult, since Luna insists on giving her advice that Usagi ignores; which leads to numerous comical situations.

Human form

In the manga, on the other hand, the three cats also have the ability to take human form. This is revealed in the Sueño story arc, equivalent to the anime's SuperS saga, in which the three become humans. However, before that Luna had already managed to temporarily transform into a woman thanks to the power of Sailor Moon's Silver Crystal, in a special chapter of the manga dedicated to her, "Princess Kaguya's Lover". In this plot, she falls in love with an ordinary human named Kakeru. This story was adapted to film in the animated film Sailor Moon S: The Movie, and shows Luna's first transformation into a human being with blue eyes, as in the manga version.

Sailor Moon

Sailor Luna (セーラールナ Sērā Runa?) is the name adopted by Luna when she transforms into a Sailor Senshi, in the live-action series Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon.

In this version of the story, Luna is shown as an animated stuffed animal, rather than a real cat. She is usually made to move and talk like a puppet, although special effects are used for complicated scenes. In act 26, she acquires the ability to turn into a girl, to whom she is given the name 'Luna Tsukino'. With this appearance, Luna can then transform into a Sailor Senshi, 'Sailor Luna'.

In human form, Luna's personality is the same as when she is a cat, although she acquires a slight obsession with sweet foods, and continues to behave like cats since she runs away from dogs and is easily distracted by toys.. She has greater than human hearing ability and can move very quickly. Luna involuntarily transforms back into a stuffed animal when she sneezes, receives a direct attack from an enemy, or falls unconscious. When she dials 6-7-2 on a special cell phone, she calls Lunatia S, and she shouts "Luna Prism Power!" She can transform into Sailor Luna, the 'Sailor Scout of love and small things'. She then uses a special attack called 'Luna Sucre Candy'. that bombards the enemy with exploding candy. Her main weapon is a wand made of candy that looks like Sailor Moon's moon scepter and can transform into other objects.
