Luis Segala and Estalella

Luis Segalá y Estalella (Barcelona, June 21, 1873 - ibid., March 17, 1938) was a Spanish linguist. In 1895 he agreed to the position of assistant professor at the University of Barcelona. He was a professor of Greek at the University of Seville (1899-1906) and at the University of Barcelona from 1906.

From 1910 he served as a Numerary Member of the Royal Academy of Good Letters of Barcelona. He was a member of the Philology Section of the Institute of Catalan Studies from 1911. In 1912 he was named Corresponding Individual of the Royal Sevillian Academy of Good Letters. He was co-director of the "Collection of Greek and Latin Classics" and of the "Library of Greek and Latin authors.

His translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey have been republished numerous times and are his best known. At the beginning of the Civil War, he was removed from his chair for disaffection with the republican regime. He died during the bombing of Barcelona by fascist Italian aviation.
