Luis Puenzo
Luis Puenzo (Buenos Aires, February 19, 1946) is an Argentine film director and screenwriter. He won the Oscar for best foreign film in 1986 with his first feature film, La historia oficial , a story about those disappeared by the Argentine dictatorship. Since that milestone Puenzo made five more films, including Gringo Viejo, with Gregory Peck and based on a novel by Mexican Carlos Fuentes, and The Plague, with William Hurt and Robert Duvall starring in an adaptation of the homonymous novel by Albert Camus.
He is a founding member of the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Argentina and was a member of its first board of directors. In 1994 he participated in the drafting of the current Cinema Law (law No. 24,377/94), which establishes the autonomy of the National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (INCAA) and the form of financing, which gave a boost to the production of films compared to previous years. From January 2020 to April 2022 Puenzo was President of the INCAA.
His daughter Lucía Puenzo is also a renowned filmmaker.
