Lorestan Province
Lorestan or Luristan (Persian: لرستان) is one of the western provinces, as well as a historical territory, of Iran located south of the Zagros Mountains. It covers an area of 28,294 square kilometers, populated by some 1,750,000 people, which makes it the thirteenth most populous province of the thirty that the country has. Its capital is Khorramabad, which the 2006 census listed as Iran's 20th largest city in terms of population.
Lorestan's orography is very rugged, and except for a small number of fertile plains, its entire territory is covered by the Zagros Mountain range. Its highest point is Mount Oshtorán, with 4,150 meters above sea level, in the Azna region (shahrestan), while the lowest altitude is reached by the province at its southern end, at about 500 meters.
The province's name means "land of the Luros" in Persian.
Archaeological vestiges of the first order of importance have been found in the region, in particular the well-known bronzes from Luristan, and the finds in the region constitute a considerable part of the collection of the National Museum of Iran, in Tehran.
Lorestan is the third province of Iran by rainfall, and collects 12% of the rains that fall on the country.
The damage caused in Lorestan by the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988), despite not being a border area, is considerable.
Bronzes from Luristan
The bronze archaeological objects made in the first half of the first millennium in Luristan are known as Luristan bronzes.
