Loquillo (singer)
José María Sanz Beltrán, better known by his stage name "Loquillo" (Barcelona, December 21, 1960), is a Spanish singer of rock'n'roll. Until mid-2007 he was accompanied by the band "Los Trogloditas". He currently presents himself only as & # 34; Loquillo & # 34;, although accompanied by his usual collaborators, such as Igor Paskual or Josu García.
History
He was born in the El Clot neighborhood, city of Barcelona, on December 21, 1960. The first group he formed was called Teddy Loquillo y sus Amigos, together with Carlos Segarra (current member of Los Rebeldes), although he had little success. Later, in 1980, Loquillo and Los Intocables were born, with whom he recorded an album and some singles. Around that time, he had to do his military service and, in his absence, the group disintegrated. But Sabino Méndez, guitarist and author of most of his songs, decided to wait for him and set out to find new musicians for a future formation. The search ended in Vic, where he found three musicians who met his expectations: Ricard Puigdomènech, Jordi Vila and Josep Simón Ramírez. After the return of Loquillo, they would embark on a new journey, forming the band that consolidated them and that accompanied him until 2007: "Loquillo y Trogloditas", who made their public debut in Tomelloso (Ciudad Real) at the summer of 1983.
Despite the abandonment of Sabino Méndez in 1989 (due to problems with heroin and differences with the rest), and the continuous comings and goings of the rest of the members, the band remained alive for 25 years. In 2007, after the abandonment of Josep Simón, the last remaining founding member and legal owner of the name, Loquillo decided to dispense with the nickname "Troglodytes", arguing that it was meaningless since none of the original members remained..
Although rock has been his cornerstone, he has also liked to try other styles. In fact, at the beginning it was even said that he was too rocker for punks, and too punk for rockers. Many years later, under the motto of Gabriel Celaya poetry is a weapon loaded with the future, he released two albums of poems, with music and adaptations by his friend Gabriel Sopeña: La vida por delante and Con elegencia, where he gives voice to works by poets of the caliber of Octavio Paz, Pablo Neruda, Pedro Salinas or Jaime Gil de Biedma among others.
Since 2000, the collaboration with Jaime Stinus began in the production work of the album Cuero español.
In 2001 he dedicated a song to the legendary actor John Wayne, with the Spanish title of his epitaph: Ugly, strong and formal.
In addition to being a singer, she has also played a secondary role on the big screen, she participated in the work of director Mario Camus (prestigious director of the Cannes award-winning The Holy Innocents) to embody the character Efrén Castells in the film The City of Wonders; He has also collaborated as a columnist in various newspapers, and has written two novels, El chico de la bomba and Barcelona Ciudad . In 2008 he represented a Falangist in the film The Good News by Helena Taberna. He has also participated in the soundtrack for Mujeres en país de guerra and Vindication , two feature films directed by his sentimental partner, Susana Koska.
Definitively dissolved from "Troglodytes" in 2008, and released his second solo album titled Balmoral, a tribute to the Madrid venue where they used to meet, along with other musicians, intellectuals and artists. For Balmoral, produced by Jaime Stinus, he was nominated for a 2008 Latin Grammy in the category of Best Rock Vocal Album, which was finally awarded to his friend Andrés Calamaro for his album The Popular Language.
On November 17, 2009, an album was released where Loquillo presented the 30 years of his musical career (1980-2010) in a deluxe edition, 99 songs on 5 CDs, 3 DVDs with video clips, extra material, etc., under the title of Loquillo Rock & Roll Star 30 years / 1980-2010.
On December 3, 2010, Loquillo was sentenced to three months in prison, after being found guilty of assaulting a man in a bar in the Gipuzkoan capital.
In 2011 Loquillo released an album with poems by Luis Alberto de Cuenca set to music entitled Her name was that of all women. The music and adaptations were in charge of Gabriel Sopeña.
Currently, Loquillo is the host of a show titled American Chopper, which airs on the Discovery Max television channel. It features the Teutul family of Orange County Choppers.
As a curiosity, the nickname Loquillo was given to him by the famous basketball player Epi, with whom he played in lower categories. During his time as a basketball player, he was under the command of one of the most successful Spanish coaches in history: Aíto García Reneses.
In March 2015, Loquillo together with the band The Nu Niles released an album titled Código Rocker with 14 songs that cover his professional career from 1980 to the present day, plus one of the band's own songs rockabilly The Nu Niles, with whom he later went on tour.
On April 22, 2016, he released a new solo album, Viento del Este. The album consists of 12 songs, including a cover of "Me olvidé de vivir".
During 2016 and 2017 he carried out the tour "Salud y Rock & Roll", which takes him to perform throughout Spain, London and Dublin, and record a live show at Las Ventas on CD and DVD. The tour ends on December 15, 2017 at the WiZink Center in Madrid.
In 2017 he was awarded the Barcelona Medal of Honor, granted by the City Council of this city.
Currently, Loquillo has numerous fans around the world. There are several social headquarters in honor of the Barcelona singer in Lasarte-Oria (Guipúzcoa), Valencia and Barcelona. It also has a fan club (Loquillo Fan Club) and different support pages on social networks such as Loquillo Fanatics, Viva el Loco or Rock and roll attitude.
In 2018, and on the occasion of its 40th anniversary, Loquillo launches the triple CD compilation Rock and Roll Attitude, which includes a new unpublished version of Rey del Glam, the song that was already a success in its original version of Alaska and Dinarama. He also announces eleven concerts in Spain on his 40 years of Rock and Roll Attitude tour.
Loquillo writes articles on the elmundo.es blog and in different weekly newspapers where we can see his criticism and opinion on current issues.
He currently resides in Laguardia (Álava).
In March 2022, Loquillo: the official biography was published, written by Felipe Cabrerizo.
