Lisa Marie Simpson is a character from the cartoon television series The Simpsons. She is the middle child of Homer and Marge Simpson and the sister of Bart and Maggie. She enjoys remarkable prominence and complexity in the series.

Lisa was conceived by cartoonist Matt Groening and made her television debut on April 19, 1987, in the animated short film titled Good Night on the variety show The Tracey Show ulman.

Yeardley Smith voices Lisa (and occasionally other characters in the series) in the original US version. In the Spanish version, the character is voiced by Isacha Mengibar. In the Spanish-American dubbing, she was played by dubbing actress Patricia Acevedo until the end of the fifteenth season, and due to problems with the dubbing company and with Fox, she was replaced by Nallely Solís from season 16 to season 31, and after starting from season 27 to season 31 the songs were performed by Maggie Vera.

However, 17 years after the conflict, the dubbing actress Patricia Accevedo resumes the voice of Lisa Simpson starting in Season 33.

Role in The Simpsons

Lisa Simpson performs the daily tasks of a girl her age, such as going to school and doing some chores at home. However, she has the advantage of being gifted, something corroborated by the school psychologist in the chapter Lisa's Sax . This means that her school performance is high and she has peculiar interests with respect to other schoolmates, such as her volunteer activities and her love of reading and studying. Her two main roles in the series consist of raising the typical problems associated with the coexistence of two brothers of different sex who are barely two years apart and questioning the values of the adult world. The writers of the series take advantage of the presence of this character not only to develop chapters with plots of ecological and idealistic content, but also to denounce the humane treatment of nature and criticize the inconsistencies or injustices of Western ideologies and religions.

As a rational element of the series, Lisa sometimes seems aware of the fictional support in which part of her family's life takes place. These resources are used by the writers as a source of humor and to wink at the most critical and demanding fans, but they are usually saved in some way by integrating them with witty comments on the same fictional reality. Lisa is the most reluctant to utter tag lines, seeing it as a publicity or commercial stunt, which she is against due to her anti-capitalist ideology. Initially a devout Christian, she has subsequently presented herself several times as a Buddhist and on some occasions. sometimes as a skeptic, she is a liberal and a democrat, she is a vegetarian; she represents the ideals of the democrats.

Biography

The fact that Marge became pregnant by Lisa meant that the family moved from an apartment in the center of Springfield to a two-story single-family house in the suburbs. This meant that the couple had to support their two children on a fairly tight budget. Therefore, although Lisa showed small gifted qualities, she had to settle for learning to play the saxophone at an early age to give outlet to her intellectual development. However, her brother Bart's behavior caused her parents to lend her more attention to him than to her, forcibly having to develop self-sufficiency with just one year of life. In any case, Lisa's first word was her brother's name and as a result of this Bart became more protective of her, with sporadic displays of affection.

Everyday life

Lisa is, in the current time of the series, an outstanding elementary school student. Sometimes she doesn't get along with the kids at school and that somehow makes her focus more on studying and reading than going out. She loves to read, write her deepest thoughts in a journal, and do almost college-level homework.

He uses his free time to carry out volunteer activities and social works, in which he usually involves his closest relatives. She connects with yoga, she is a Buddhist close to the Vajrayana school and likes to meditate, as well as honor the Dalai lama. He dedicates his weekends to going out with his family and, when he has to choose what type of activity to do, it is always of an intellectual or environmental nature (such as going to museums, nature reserves, or picnics), which he dislikes or bores. to the rest of his family. She has sometimes given up on hobbies that family members prefer, as a way to connect with them. She used to selflessly dedicate a lot of time to her mother, while she had to call the attention of her father, who tended to ignore her or pay attention to her out of obligation. She often fights with Bart, who often calls her "Lis". as a sign of affection, but despite everything they share many things together, and one of the main hobbies of the two when they get together is to solve the problems of their friends or acquaintances.

Character

Lisa is a smart, curious, and ambitious 8-year-old girl who proves to be the most intellectually savvy member of the family, especially in academic fields. Lisa values her integrity, but she is highly competitive, having a continual drive to improve herself. Despite her rebellion against social norms, she tends to err on the side of being vain, selfish, conceited, superficial, rebellious, or arrogant. Even with her intellect, Lisa has received, like Bart, arrests and punishments a large number of times, usually for her rebellious and asocial attitude, which is capable of deeply embarrassing authority figures by showing them the mistakes they make. At his young age, he develops a moral rectitude that he believes is appropriate for everyone and he preaches and instills it, not very successfully among the unethical society with which he lives. Because of this, it is her mother with whom she connects best, although Marge is much more chastened and resigned than Lisa due to her age and her long experience in the real world. In the episode Mother Simpson it is verified that Lisa has taken much of her intellect and behavior from her grandmother, Mona Simpson, since both have conversations with a high lexical level and move in an activist line. In addition to this, in the episode Lisa the Simpson, Grampa Simpson tells Lisa about "Simpsons genes" that would make her brain lose intelligence until it was at the level of her father and her brother. To deny such a claim, Homer calls all the Simpsons around, and it is discovered that "the defective Simpson gene" only affected the Y chromosome, so female Simpsons came out ahead in their intelligence.

Despite her ambition to grow up early, Lisa is an eight-year-old girl. As such, her desire to play, goof off, and scold her siblings or her pets often overwhelms her sanity. Lisa is very sensitive, susceptible and emotional, so it is not uncommon for her to sometimes get angry or fall into depression due to her incomprehension of the harshness of the world around her. She has a high self-perception and can react negatively when she feels outmatched even by her own siblings. She is a lover of jazz music, which is why she plays the baritone saxophone and sometimes the guitar. On the other hand, she is less open about physical activities and sports. In her search for a connection with nature, Lisa has become a vegetarian, an environmentalist, an activist and a Buddhist. She is very enamored, especially with boys who think like her and, otherwise, she would try to reform them when she finds some stranger attractive. It is also worth noting her great fondness for ponies, in addition to her desire to have one.

Lisa has the body of an ordinary eight-year-old girl, though she has passed it off as a teenage athlete who hasn't been able to fully develop it due to practicing rhythmic gymnastics. She has blonde hair spiky around her head and it has been implied that her eyes are blue (although only two black dots are visible onscreen). She always wears a red spiked one-piece dress, a distinctive white pearl necklace, and red shoes. She has also been seen with her Sunday suit and various clothing according to the demands of each chapter.

Creation

Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons.

Matt Groening first came up with the idea for the Simpson family in the lobby of James L. Brooks' office. He had been asked to create a series of animated shorts, based on his comic strip Life in Hell. Realizing that in order to animate Life in Hell he would have to relinquish the copyright on his life's work, Groening decided to create something different. Within minutes, he laid out his vision of a family dysfunctional and named the characters after members of his own family, Lisa being named after one of his sisters. Lisa first appeared, with the rest of the Simpson family, in the April 19, 1987 short Good Night, aired on The Tracey Ullman Show.

Groening designed the main protagonists with unique silhouettes and features, to make them stand out from the other characters in the series. Lisa and Maggie are the only ones to have spiky hair around their heads, which projects directly from their heads without separating traces. Lisa's little dress differs from Marge's in that she ends in spikes and her pearl necklace and earrings are white instead of red. These accessories, like Marge's, are inspired by Wilma Flintstone, while her clothing is reminiscent of Pedro's.

Development

Lisa is probably the most complex and changed character in the series. Initially, Lisa was perpetuating the role she had played in the Tracey Ullman Show shorts: she was a "female version of Bart"; and she was just as mischievous. In the early seasons Lisa had interests as childish as Bart's, such as comic books, getting into mischief, and more girl-oriented activities like playing with her Stacy Malibu doll, but they also began to outline her sensitive and naughty personality. intelligent with episodes like Moaning Lisa or Krusty Gets Busted. feminist mentality and an ideology based on oriental ethics. But despite usually being the voice of reason and morality, she also has her fair share of flaws. Her presence in the series intersperses her childish aspect with the more responsible, idealistic or intelligent depending on the demands of each episode. The last one is the one that she has gained in complexity, as well as episodes in which Lisa faces the reality of the world due to her moral convictions, where sometimes she also learns important lessons.

Voice actress Yeardley Smith interprets Lisa's voice.

Voice and dubbing

Nancy Cartwright originally auditioned for the voice of Lisa, but was soon told that her voice would be better suited for Bart. Yeardley Smith had initially auditioned to record Bart's voice, but the casting director, Pretty Pietila, he thought her voice was too high, so he gave her the role of Lisa. However, to interpret the voice, Smith raises the tone of his own a bit. In Spain, the dubbing is done by Isacha Mengibar, while in Latin America the work was done by the Mexican Patricia Acevedo until the sixteenth season, when it was replaced by Nallely Solís until Season 31.

Cultural influence

In 2001, Lisa's character received a special award from the "Ongoing Commitment Directors Board" at the Environmental Media Awards. Lisa the Vegetarian, an episode from the seventh season, won an Environmental Media Award for "Best Comedy Episode on Television" and an Genesis for "Best Comedy on Television, Commitment to Society". Lisa was also included in the list of "Best Cartoon Characters of All Time" from TV Guide along with Bart, ranking eleventh.

In Japan, the show's broadcasters found that they could change Japanese dislike of the show by focusing attention on Lisa. Lisa's good intentions would be the voice of reason and kindness in her family and her city, making the series more suitable for the taste of the citizens. In a tribute prepared by Antena 3 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the series on the network, the Leader of the Opposition in Spain at the time, Mariano Rajoy, declared that "she has values and also has a future".
