Línjì Yìxuán (臨済義玄; Wade-Giles: Lin-chi I-hsüan; Japanese: Rinzai Gigen) (? - 866) was the founder of a school of Zen Buddhism that bears his name (Rinzai Zen). Rinzai's teaching was characterized by harsh encounters (harsh) with students, with the aim of reaching the moment of enlightenment (satori) by punching, kicking, slapping, etc. His sermons were collected in the Lin-chi lu (Chinese; Japanese: Rinzai Roku ) ( Lin-chi's Record ) by her students. He is known by the name Imje in Korea where he spread the meditative Buddhism called Seon .
