Lepturus is a genus of herbaceous plants belonging to the Poaceae family. It is native to the east coast of Africa, Madagascar, Australia and Polynesia.

Taxonomy

The genus was described by Robert Brown and published in Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae 207. 1810. The type species is: Lepturus repens (J.R.Forst.) R.Br.

Etymology

The generic name derives from the Greek leptos (slender) and oura (tail), referring either to the linear lanceolate glume or, (more probably), to its slender inflorescence.
