Lepisosteus is a genus of fish in the family Lepisosteidae. This genus groups together four species of primitive bony fish commonly called "lizard pejelagortos", said Fish are among the oldest groups of freshwater fish in existence today, even being classified as "living fossils".

The genus is made up of four species:

  • Lepisosteus oculatus (Winchell, 1864) (chuckles)
  • Lepisosteus osseus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Long nostrils)
  • Lepisosteus dishestomus (Rafinesque, 1820) (Short-nose puff)
  • Lepisosteus platyrhincus (DeKay, 1842) (Florida Pejelagarte)

Three species previously classified as Lepisosteus (the alligator gar, the alligator gar, and the manjuarí) are now part of the genus Atractosteus.
