Leónidas Barletta (Buenos Aires, August 30, 1902 - March 15, 1975) was an Argentine writer, journalist and playwright.

Trajectory

He was a figure of the Argentine independent left. In 1930 the Teatro del Pueblo opened its doors and Barletta was its director from March 20, 1931 until his death. He was even known as the man with the bell because he would go out with a bell to call the public, shouting: "Show, show...".

At Barletta's request, Roberto Arlt approached the Teatro del Pueblo, the place where he would premiere almost all of his plays, such as Three hundred million, Saverio, the cruel and The deserted island.

Independent theater

He participated in the Boedo group and the founding movement of independent theaters. The Boedo group published in Editorial Claridad and met at Café El Japonés. He was one of the animators of the crossfire with the Florida group. According to Bernardo Koremblit, in his book Coherence of the Paradox, Barletta said of Borges, a well-known figure from Florida: "Cachafaz... Failed... Poor Borges... Criollo man and septuagenarian man... Seeker of little stalls... Persian tale maker... and wash off all that metaphysical grime."

Journalism

As part of his activity as a journalist, he was a columnist for several publications, in addition to

  • Founded and led the cultural paper Purposes and
  • He was editor of the journal of the Editorial Claridad.

Cinema

He directed the film Los afincaos released in 1941, based on his script based on the play of the same name.
