Leonard Bloomfield (Chicago April 1, 1887 - New Haven April 18, 1949) was an American philologist and linguist, one of the most important representatives of American structuralism.

Career

He developed works in morphology and syntax. He was the principal founder of the American Linguistic Society.

He specialized in European linguistic currents, especially in the comparative method that he applied to Amerindian languages. He was a professor, among other American universities, at Chicago and Yale.

In his famous work El Lenguaje (Language), published in 1933 as a revision of his Introduction to the study of language (1914), describes the state of avant-garde linguistics at that time. The book adopts the psychological framework of Watson's behaviorist school and rejects the postulation of everything that was not "directly observable" for linguistic analysis. In the study of language, the semantic aspect is marginalized.

Bloomfield highlights the methods of distributional analysis that Zellig Harris will later develop in his work Methods of Structural Linguistics. Bloomfield's influence on the American and European structuralist schools has been considerable.

Noam Chomsky's linguistics teachers followed the "post-Bloomfieldian" school, although Chomsky would not follow his teachers.
