History
Origins
Leeds United F.C. was founded at the end of 1919 after the demise of Leeds City Football Club. In 1920 he was chosen to participate in Football League One. The team led by Arthur Fairclough finished in 14th place, winning 14 games and drawing another ten. The scorers for this team were Tommy Howarth and Robert Thompson. The following season Leeds United finished in eighth place.
In the 1922-23 season, Leeds moved up the rankings. This year, inside right Percy Whipp joined the team. In the following season, with the signing of Joe Richmond, Leeds United managed to finish champion and rose to the Football League Championship, which at that time was the highest category of English football. The first season in the first division was not easy but the team was able to finish the season in 18th place out of the relegation places. Leeds United had three consecutive seasons in the first division before ending the 1920s with relegation. In 1932 Leeds United returned to the top flight with a great team that included the likes of Charlie Keetley, Joe Firth, Billy Furness, Ernie Hart and Wilf Copping. The team remained in the top flight until 1939 when World War II broke out. During the war the Elland Road facilities were used by the military administration and at the end of the war the players returned to the club but the first season after the war (1946-47) Leeds United came last, winning only six games. The following year the season was bad and he was about to go down in category again.
For the rest of the decade Leeds United remained in mid-table. The 1949-50 season ended with a creditable fifth place and they reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, losing narrowly to Arsenal FC at Highbury Stadium. During this campaign he established himself in the John Charles team. Leeds United did not manage to return to the top flight until the 1955-56 season after nine years in the second division.
This team included John Charles, Harold Brook, Jack Charlton, Big Jack and Albert Nightingale. In the 1956-57 season, the team was second in the standings when on September 18, 1956, a fire destroyed one of the stands, resulting in a large part of the club's sports equipment being burned. Leeds finished the season in eighth position. After this season John Charles was transferred to Juventus from Turin for £65,000.
The 1957-58 season without the participation of John Charles, the team fell to 17th position. The 1958-59 season Leeds United signed Don Revie. The 1959-60 season began with the signing of Billy Bremner who would remain at the club until 1976, however the team was relegated again.
The heyday with Don Revie's “Dirties Leeds”
The following season, after Bill Lambton stepped down as manager, Don Revie would take over as player-manager but the team finished 14th in the second division. The following year it was even worse and the team was almost relegated to the third division.
The 1962-63 campaign saw Leeds United advance to a fifth-place finish. The following season they managed to return to the first division without losing a game in the whole league at Elland Road collecting a total of 63 points. In this team, the forward Peter Lorimer stood out, who stayed with the club until 1979. The 1964-65 campaign Leeds United finished in second position in the first division tied on points with Manchester United who won the championship on goal difference. Players like Alan Peacock, Johnny Giles or Hunter Johnson stood out in this team. Revie's team had also reached the FA Cup final, where they lost 2–1 to Liverpool FC after extra time at Wembley Stadium.
The 1965-66 season again saw Leeds United finish second in the top division and compete in their first season in European football, where they reached the Fairs Cup semi-final before losing to Real Zaragoza. In the 1966-67 season, the team finished the competition in fourth position, reaching the FA Cup semifinals where they were eliminated 1-0 by Chelsea FC. In Europe they lost the final of the Fairs Cup against Dinamo Zagreb.
The 1967-68 season began with the signing of Mick Jones. The team finished in fourth position but Leeds United got their first title by beating Arsenal FC 1-0 in the final of the English League Cup with a goal from Terry Cooper. In the Fairs Cup, they faced CA Spora Luxembourg in the first round, which they defeated 0-9 and 7-0. In the second round, their rival was Partizan of Belgrade, whom they defeated 1-2 in the first leg and tied 1-1 in the second leg. In the round of 16 they faced Hibernian FC whom they defeated 1-0 at Elland Road, drawing 1-1 in Scotland. In the quarterfinals they faced Rangers FC with whom they drew 0-0 in Scotland to win the second leg 0-2. In the semifinals, they again faced a Scottish team, Dundee FC, whom they defeated in the second leg 1-0 after having drawn 1-1 in Scotland. The final was played against Ferencvárosi TC, whom they defeated 1-0.
The 1968-69 season began with high hopes after these successes. The team responded and got its first league finish the championship with only two defeats.
The following season began with the signing of Allan Clarke. Leeds United finished second in the league, losing the FA Cup final to Chelsea FC but clinching the Charity Shield after defeating Manchester City.
In their first participation in the European Cup (1969-70 season) they faced FC Lyn Oslo, winning at Elland Road by a resounding 10-0 and in the second leg by 0-6. The second round faced the Hungarian Ferencvárosi TC, whom they defeated 3-0. In the quarterfinals the rival was Standard Liège, whom they beat in both games 1-0. In the semifinals, the rival was the Scottish club Celtic FC, a team that was able to win 0-1 at Elland Road and 2-1 at Hampden Park, thus being eliminated in the semifinals.
In the 1970/71 season, Leeds United returned to second place in the standings. In the Fairs Cup they faced Sarpsborg FK in the first round, whom they defeated 0-1 and 5-0. In the next round his rival was Dinamo Dresden, whom he defeated 1-0 at Elland Road, qualifying for double the value of the goals after losing 2-1 in the German Democratic Republic. In the round of 16 they faced Sparta Prague, whom they defeated in England 6-0 and in Czechoslovakia 2-3. In the quarterfinals, their rival was Vitória FC, whom they defeated 2-1 in England and drew 1-1 in Portugal. In the semifinals they faced Liverpool FC, whom they beat at Anfield Road 1-0, drawing in the second leg. The final faced Juventus of Turin in the first leg in Italy, the match ended 2-2 and the second leg 1-1, so Leeds was champion by the double value of the goals scored away from home. In the 1971-72 season, Leeds repeated in second place but won the FA Cup thanks to a goal from Allan Clarke. In his participation in the UEFA Cup he had a discreet participation facing in the first round with the Belgian team of Lierse SK whom he beat in the first leg by 0-2 but was eliminated after a 0-4 in the second leg in Elland Road.
The 1972-73 season was about to repeat the FA Cup title but lost the final against Sunderland FC. In league finished in a third position. In their participation in the European Cup Winners' Cup, they faced MKE Ankaragücü in the first round, with whom they tied the first leg 1-1, winning the second leg 1-0. In the second round they faced FC Carl Zeiss Jena with whom they drew 0-0 in the first leg, winning the second leg 2-0. In the quarterfinals, they faced Rapid from Bucharest, whom they defeated 5-0 at Elland Road and 3-1 in Romania. In the semifinals they faced Hajduk Split, whom they defeated 1-0 in the first leg, drawing 0-0 in the second leg. The final was played against AC Milan who would become champion with a goal from Luciano Chiarugi. The match was highly contentious and Leeds United claimed two penalties.
The 1973-1974 season ended with the league title for Leeds United. After this season Don Revie left Leeds United to become England manager. In their participation in the UEFA Cup, they faced Norwegian Stromsgodset IF in the first round, with whom they drew 1-1 in the first leg, winning the second leg by a resounding 6-1. In the second round, they faced Hibernian FC, whom they defeated in a penalty shootout after finishing both games with 0-0 draws. In the next round, they faced Vitória FC, whom they defeated 1-0 in Leeds but managed to beat them 3 -1 in Setúbal for which he was eliminated.
Don Revie's time coincides with the club's heyday and the start of rivalries against other teams that made them hated by other clubs' supporters and earned them various nicknames such as “Dirty Leeds” (“Leeds dirty” because of his toughness) although his followers knew him as “SuperLeeds”.
Beginning of decline
Don Revie's successor as manager was Brian Clough but he only lasted 44 days in charge. During this time he signed John McGovern, John O'Hare and Duncan McKenzie. The one chosen to replace him was Jimmy Armfield. Leeds United suffered in performance and finished ninth in the league.
However, it was in this season (1974-75) that the team had its best participation in the European Cup. Leeds United faced FC Zürich in the first round, whom they defeated 4-1 in England, qualifying for the next round despite losing 2-1 in Switzerland. In the second round they faced Újpest FC whom they eliminated after winning 1-2 in the first leg and 3-0 in the second leg. In the quarterfinals, they faced RSC Anderlecht, whom they eliminated after beating them 3-0 and 0-1. In the semifinals the rival was FC Barcelona, whom they defeated at Elland Road 2-1 and with whom they managed to tie at the Camp Nou 1-1. In the final they faced Bayern Münich who defeated them in a controversial 2-0 final. Before the goals from Franz Roth and Gerd Müller, the referee sent off Peter Lorimer in addition to not calling two penalties in favor of the English.
The 1975-76 season began with the departures of Terry Cooper, Billy Bremner, Norman Hunter, Johnny Giles and Terry Yorath and the additions of Tony Currie, Brian Flynn, Arthur Graham and Ray Hankin. Between this season and the 1977-78 season (in which Jimmy Armfield remained in charge) Leeds United occupied mid-table positions in the first division.
The next manager was Jimmy Adamson who led Leeds United to fifth place in the 1978-79 season. However, in the 1979-80 season the team did not measure up and he finally had to resign in October 1980.
The team returned to the UEFA Cup in the 1979-80 season but had a discreet performance. In the first round, they faced the Maltese team Valletta FC, which they beat 0-4 and 3-0. In the second round, they faced the Romanian team FC Universitatea Craiova, who won 2-0 in Romania and 0-2 in England.
The Difficult 80s
Allan Clarke was chosen to manage Leeds United and left the team in ninth position. In the 1981-82 season he finished in last place and was relegated to the second division, which cost him his dismissal. The team remained in the middle of the second division table for three seasons and in the 1984-1985 season Peter Lorimer returned to the team at the age of 37, who became the top scorer in the history of Leeds United, beating John Charles. Allan Clarke was replaced by Billy Bremner who left the team in 14th position. In the 1987-88 season the team finished seventh in the second division. In the middle of the 1988-89 season, Howard Wilkinson took over the team, leaving it in 10th position.
The Wilkinson era and the last League
In the 1989-90 season, Wilkinson's first full time in charge of the team, Leeds United won the second division. Players such as Gordon Strachan, Gary McAllister, Mel Sterland and John Hendrie stood out in this team. The 1990-91 season began with the signing of Lee Chapman. The team finished fourth and Chapman was the top scorer in the category with 21 goals. The 1991-92 season began with the signing of Éric Cantona and Leeds United surprisingly achieved the title of champion, beating Manchester United.
The following year, however, the team finished a disappointing 17th. Leeds United returned to the European Cup in the 1992-93 season. In the first round they defeated VfB Stuttgart but in the second round they were eliminated by Rangers FC 2-1 and 1-2.
The 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons Leeds United finished in fifth position.
The 1995-96 season began with the signing of Tony Yeboah. This year they managed to reach the League Cup final but lost to Aston Villa 3-0. In their participation in the UEFA Cup, they faced AS Monaco in the first round, whom they defeated at the Stade Louis II by 0-3, qualifying for the next round despite losing at Elland Road by 0-1. In the next round they faced PSV Eindhoven who won England 3-5 and the Netherlands 3-0.
For the 1996-97 season, he signed Lee Sharpe, Nigel Martyn, Lee Bowyer and Ian Rush. Wilkinson was sacked mid-season due to poor performance and was replaced by George Graham. The team finished in 11th position in the league.
The O'Leary Era
For the 1997-98 season, they wanted to reinforce the forward line with the signings of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and the midfield with David Hopkin, Alfie Haaland and Bruno Ribeiro. Leeds had a good campaign and finished in fifth position. In the 1998-99 season, Graham left Leeds and was replaced by David O'Leary. Leeds again had a good campaign and finished fourth in the league. The 1999-00 season the team came third, qualifying for the Champions League. His participation in the UEFA Cup in the 1999-2000 season was one of the most successful in the club's history. In the first round, they faced Partizan Belgrade, whom they defeated 1-3 and 1-0. In the second round, the rival was FC Lokomotiv Moscow, whom they defeated 4-1 at Elland Road and 0-3 at the Lokomotiv Stadium. His next rival was also Russian Spartak Moscow, with whom he was defeated 2-1 in Russia but whom he beat 1-0 in England, qualifying for scoring the most goals in the opposite field. In the round of 16 they faced AS Roma with whom they drew 0-0 in Italy, beating England 1-0. In the quarterfinals, the rival was Slavia from Prague, which they defeated 3-0 in England, losing the second leg in Prague 2-1. In the semifinals they faced Galatasaray Spor Kulübü with whom they were defeated 2-0 at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium, tying the second leg 2-2. On the eve of the first leg of the semi-final, two Leeds United fans were stabbed to death in Istanbul. For the 2000-01 season, Olivier Dacourt, Mark Viduka, Dominic Matteo and Rio Ferdinand were signed.
In the Premier League, Leeds United had to settle for fourth place and a place in the UEFA Cup for the 2001-2002 season. This season he also played a great role in the Champions League, beating TSV 1860 Munich in the preliminary phase, whom he beat in England 2-1 and in Germany 0-1. In the first group stage, they had to face teams like FC Barcelona, AC Milan and Beşiktaş Jimnastik Kulübü. They qualified for the second group stage where they faced Real Madrid, SS Lazio and RSC Anderlecht, ranking second in the group after Real Madrid. In the quarterfinals, they faced Deportivo de la Coruña, whom they beat 3-0 in England, with which they qualified despite being defeated 2-0 at the Riazor Stadium. In the semifinals they faced Valencia CF with whom they drew 0-0 at Elland Road, losing 3-0 at the Mestalla Stadium.
Leeds United improved their squad with the signings of Robbie Fowler from Liverpool FC and Seth Johnson for the following season. These players came to strengthen a squad that included young players such as Jonathan Woodgate, Paul Robinson, Alan Smith, Ian Harte, Harry Kewell, Michael Bridges and Lee Bowyer along with other more experienced players such as Mark Viduka, Rio Ferdinand, Olivier Dacourt, David Batty, Lucas Radebe, Eirik Bakke, Robbie Keane, Nigel Martyn, Dominic Matteo and Fowler, Leeds United looked like a real force to be reckoned with. The 2001-2002 season Leeds United was in fifth position. Failure to qualify for the Champions League was a blow to the club's economy and Leeds United had to sell some players before the start of the 2002-03 season. In the UEFA Cup they faced CS Marítimo with whom they were defeated 1-0 in Funchal but who they were able to defeat in the second leg 3-0. The next round he was measured against Troyes AF, whom he defeated 4-2 in England, losing 3-2 in the second leg. The third round saw Grasshopper Club Zürich which they defeated 1-2 drawing at Elland Road 2-2. In the round of 16 they faced PSV Eindhoven with whom they drew 0-0 in the Netherlands, losing 0-1 in England.
Crisis and decline
O´Leary left the club in 2002 and was replaced by Terry Venables with whom the club flirted with relegation and was sacked in March 2003. He was replaced by Peter Reid who managed to avoid relegation. In his participation in the 2002-03 UEFA Cup he faced PFK Metalurg Zaporizhia, whom they beat 1-0, drawing the second leg 1-1. In the second round, his rival was Hapoel Tel-Aviv, whom they beat 1-0 at Elland Road and 1-4 in the second leg. In the third round, they faced Málaga CF with whom they drew at La Rosaleda, losing 2-1 at Elland Road.
However, the club was financially handicapped with debts of almost 80 million pounds. Peter Reid had to leave the team in November 2003 due to a series of poor results and Eddie Gray was his replacement who could not avoid relegation. In 2004 the club declared bankruptcy which meant that Leeds United AFC had to sell valuable players at a much lower price than the real one. The thing does not end there, that same year they had to sell the training ground to the Elland Road stadium, with a term of 25 years to be able to recover it. By 2005, none of the previously named players were part of the white squad.
In the 2004-2005 season, the team finished in 14th position. The following season they finished fifth and played for promotion although they were beaten 3-0 by Watford FC.
In the 2006-07 season, Leeds were relegated to the third category of English football for the first time. The only notable thing about these years was the victory in the FA Cup against Manchester United in 2010 with a goal from Jermaine Beckford. That same year the club could be promoted to the second division again. Today the club is considered "debt free" which is at least doubtful, taking into account that its stadium has not yet been paid in a timely manner and that there are several lawsuits against the institution. The only thing keeping Leeds going today is their immeasurable crowds, which is why Alex Ferguson called Elland Road the “most intimidating” ground he had ever played on.
It was Bielsa (2017-2022)
In 2017 the club was acquired by the Italian billionaire Andrea Radrizzani, who reinforced it with an internationally renowned coach and outstanding players. To start the 2018/19 season in the Football League Championship, the Argentine Marcelo Bielsa was hired, who had just led the Lille Olympique Sporting Club in France, and mainly included Patrick Bamford, Kiko Casilla, Liam Cooper, Pablo Hernández and Kalvin Phillips. Bielsa modified the habits of the squad, his training method and applied the total football system, which began to show results. At the end of the season the team finished third after holding the lead for almost the entire tournament. In the playoffs for the last promotion they lost to Derby County in the semifinals.
The 2019/20 season started well, with the team focused on their objective. He did not make the mistakes of the past and was able to round off a great season. On July 17, 2020, he achieved promotion to the Premier League, since his immediate rival West Bromwich Albion fell to Huddersfield, securing a place in the highest English division. A day later, on July 18 after Brentford's 1-0 defeat against Stoke City, he was champion of the Football League Championship with two dates remaining. For the 2020/21 season, the club released the documentary Take us home, which recounts its promotion process, and spent 107 million euros on reinforcements, being the third in the league and fifth in the world, mainly by Hélder Costa, Raphael Dias, Diego Llorente and Rodrigo Moreno. After the poor results achieved by the team so far in the league, the club's board of directors fired Bielsa on February 27, 2022, after falling 2-4 against Manchester United FC in the 2021-22 season.
Uniform
- Uniform holder: T-shirt, trousers and white stockings.
- Alternative uniform: T-shirt and trousers and yellow stockings.
The original Leeds United AFC kit was a blue-and-white shirt with white shorts and blue socks similar to the kit of Huddersfield Town FC with whom they shared president, Hilton Crowther. The first change in the kit occurred in 1934 when his shirt adopted the colors yellow and blue, keeping the color of the pants and socks.
In the 1959-60 season, the team was relegated to the second division and Don Revie, manager of the English team, decided that the team should wear all white like Real Madrid, which had just won its fifth European Cup, as a stimulus to improve the team performance. It was after what is known as "Di Stéfano's Madrid" - astonished the world in the 1959-60 European Cup final, beating Eintracht Frankfurt Fußball 7-3, a match witnessed in the stands by Revie. The impact of the Madrid game was such that he decided that the Elland Road team would abandon their uniform with a blue and yellow shirt for a total white one to give his team a new winning path, as he stated.
"We've been wearing blue and yellow. What have we won since? Nothing. From now on, this team stops being a loser, because I train it. And I'm not a loser. You know what team has won more titles in the world? Real Madrid. Do you know what color Real Madrid saw? White. Well, from this very moment, this team will play white. It will be an unequivocal sign that this Leeds is, from this moment on, a winner".Don Revie. March 1961. Leeds.
It should be noted that since then Leeds United A.F.C. became one of the best teams in England, winning numerous titles until the 1980s, changing the color and history of the leodensians, Since then with the nickname "Whites" (Whites).
Stadium
Elland Road is a football stadium in the city of Leeds, in the county of West Yorkshire in the United Kingdom. It has a capacity of 40,000 people and opened in 1897. It currently ranks eleventh in the list of the largest football stadiums in the United Kingdom.
Rivalry
Leeds United FC have a strong rivalry with Manchester United which stems from the geographical location of both clubs and a war that goes back no less than a century XV, the War of the Roses, which pitted the house of Lancaster (which was based on the Lancashire region and whose emblem was a red flower) against the house of York (which rested on the Yorkshire region and whose emblem was a white flower). The rivalry between the regions increased during the Industrial Revolution, which made Manchester rich thanks to the production of cotton manufactures. This caused the wool trade, which was the economic base of Leeds, to decline. Finally, the fact that both teams had competitive squads during the sixties and seventies made the rivalry between the two teams grow.
Another team with which there is a great rivalry is Chelsea FC. The enmity was established in the 1970s with clashes such as the one in the FA Cup final that ended up being for Chelsea after two tiebreakers. The rivalry was not only sporting but the fans of both teams had altercations and hooligan type confrontations.
By proximity we can also mention the clubs from the city of Sheffield, that is, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday. Other close rivalries are against Huddersfield Town, the cities of Huddersfield and Leeds being only 30 minutes from each other, and with Bradford City, Bradford being a city almost attached to Leeds.
Another of the many rivalries of Leeds is the one they have had with Derby County since the early 70s when Brian Clough was their coach and Don Revie at Leeds, both coaches antagonized in terms of forms, Clough being a coach more dogmatic and Don Revie more pragmatic, both clubs and coaches competed at the top of English football those years developing the rivalry, in more current times as Frank Lampard coach of Derby there were crosses with Marcelo Bielsa during his time at Leeds due to accusations of spying on the Argentine coach.
