Lascano is a Uruguayan city located north of the department of Rocha on routes 14 and 15. It is also the seat of the municipality of the same name. It is surrounded by important marshes and wetlands in the east of the country.

Geography

The Cebollatí River is located 13 km from the city, which becomes attractive in the summer due to the tranquility and safety of its waters. In addition, Lascano has the two most important rice plants in the country (Saman and Coopar), which is why it is considered the country's rice capital. It is 260 km from Montevideo and 100 km from the departmental capital (Rocha).

The closest population centers are Velázquez (48 km), José Pedro Varela (42 km), Chuy (84 km), San Luis (50 km), 18 de Julio (70 km), Cebollatí (60 km), Breakdowns (Cebollatí River) (13 km).

History

It was founded in the fields of rancher Francisco Fernández, in the year 1876. Originally it bore the name of "Tres Islas". Subsequently, and as a consequence of the different procedures carried out before the national government to have police authorities and various public services, he took the name of Fernández's compadre, the Basque Francisco Lascano, who signed the documents, Fernández being illiterate. With the new decentralization law, Lascano became a municipality, being elected as mayor for the period 2010-2015, Ricardo Rodríguez Dutra.

Population

According to the 2011 census, the city had a population of 7,645 inhabitants.
