Lars ulrich
Lars Ulrich (Gentofte, December 26, 1963) is a Danish tennis player and musician known mainly for being the drummer, composer, founder and leader (along with James Hetfield) although he is considered more drummer and frontman for the American thrash metal band Metallica.
He was born on December 26, 1963 in Gentofte (Denmark), into an upper-middle-class family. A tennis prodigy in his youth, Ulrich moved to Los Angeles, California at the age of sixteen to further his education, but instead of continuing to play tennis, he decided to pursue drumming. After placing an ad in a local Los Angeles newspaper, The Recycler , he met James Hetfield.
His playing is very varied, ranging from the simple rock rhythms of the album Metallica (The Black Album), to the complex and fast parts on many of the songs on the older albums. Metallica heavy hits like Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning or ...And Justice for All.
Biography
Son of professional tennis player Torben Ulrich, already in his early years he traveled the world for his family dedication to tennis. He acquired his taste for music from his father: Torben Ulrich's passion, in addition to tennis courts, was avant-garde music, which he passed on to his son, from the jazz saxophonist Ornette Coleman to Jimi Hendrix.
In February 1973, at the age of nine, Lars attended his first concert to see Deep Purple in Copenhagen. This crucial moment greatly influenced his taste for heavy music. But his father wanted him to follow his path: tennis, for which his education was focused on that sport, becoming one of the best tennis players in Denmark in youth categories, located at times between 10 and 15 in the ranking, which which was promising for such a career, however, music was too strong a passion. In his games he imagined himself as a drummer beating cardboard boxes with sticks as a drum, imitating his idols John Bonham from Led Zeppelin, Ian Paice from Deep Purple and Roger Taylor from Queen.
In 1976, “after begging his grandmother 50 thousand times on his knees”, he received a battery as a gift from her. It was her first battery. Lars immediately wanted to play with a group, but his father advised him to be patient: "Try taking instrument lessons first," to which Lars replied, "I can learn in 10 days. I have always lived for this."
Lars Ulrich immersed himself in listening to the bands of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), such as Iron Maiden, Diamond Head, Motörhead and Black Sabbath, Fist -his favorites -, among others.
In 1979 his father enrolled him in a famous tennis academy in Florida (USA), which he considered his "tennis prison". The following year his entire family moved from Denmark to New Port Beach in Los Angeles. There his passion for heavy metal became manifest.
The vital contradiction between being a professional tennis player or devoting himself to music was a constant unknown. When he traveled to Europe he was reacquainted with the music of his favorites, Diamond Head, and even stayed with the band for a while, and in Denmark he met local heavy metal groups. When he returned to Los Angeles he had decided his destiny: music.
In those days he met the guitarist of the group Anvil Chorus, Kurdt Vanderhoof, from San Francisco, who urged him to join his band, but Lars wanted to stay in Los Angeles.
Ulrich created The Music Company label in 1998, distributed by Elektra, signed by Canadians DDT; the Goudie Texans; Oakland, California's Systematic and Brand New Immortals, among others.
Of the performances he has done without Metallica, one with Kirk Hammett and Kid Rock on Jay Leno's Tonight's Show and the Grand Slam Jam event, tennis tournament and concert in which Ulrich played doubles is remembered with John McEnroe against the pairing of Jim Courier and R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills, and against Andre Agassi and Yankees right fielder Paul O' Neill. After the clashes, Ulrich on drums, McEnroe on guitar and vocals, Mills on keyboards and Courier on the other guitar, had fun playing Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Johnny B Goode by Chuck Berry, Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix and Welcome to Hell by Venom among others, for more than an hour and a half.
In an interview with The Quietus in the summer of 2008 Ulrich highlights the importance of the criticized album St. Anger for the band's current situation: «I know that people don't think it's a good album, I understand and respect that. I know people find it very difficult. But what I have is 100% certain that if it weren't for St. Anger, Death Magnetic wouldn't sound the way it does. St. Anger had to happen: people may not see anything musically appreciable in it, which I respect, but you have to at least respect the existence of St. Anger. I have no regrets about him, but I am proud; proud that we had the courage to look past him, because if it weren't for completely reinventing ourselves during the writing process of St. Anger, not only would there be no Death Magnetic, but James Hetfield would surely be in Nashville playing country music., I would be producing movies and Kirk Hammett would be touring with Joe Satriani, and we might never have met Robert".
Private life
Ulrich has been married three times. His first marriage was in 1988 to Debbie Jones, a British woman he met on tour, but they divorced in 1990 due to Ulrich's constant absence while he was on tour and recording the Black Album. His second marriage was to Skylar Satenstein, an emergency physician, from 1997 to 2004. They had two sons, Myles (b. August 5, 1998) and Layne (b. May 6, 2001). Satenstein was the inspiration for "Skylar", the love interest of Will Hunting (Matt Damon) in the movie Good Will Hunting, as Satenstein and Damon coincided in college. Ulrich and Satenstein divorced in March 2004.
The Danish newspaper Nordjyske reported that Lars Ulrich was caught at Aalborg airport, located in northern Denmark, with his new girlfriend, actress Connie Nielsen, popular for her appearance in Gladiator. The newspaper reported that the couple presumably traveled to their homeland to visit Nielsen's parents. The couple have a son, named Bryce Thadeus Ulrich-Nielsen, born May 21, 2007.
In 2015, he married model Jessica Miller.
Ulrich is an art collector. His father, Torben, was also very fond of art and painting, so Ulrich grew up surrounded by art and music, both of which have always been a part of his life. After Metallica's founding, he began visiting museums and art galleries during long tours with the band. In a 2002 interview Ulrich said: 'I felt like I could lose myself in art and get away from the world of music. It became my great hiding place".
In a 2008 interview with Stereo Warning, he said, "We had art all over the house when I was growing up. It has been my passion for 20-25 years. It's a zone where I can go and be myself. It's not about being in Metallica or being the drummer in a rock band. I am accepted for who I am in artistic circles. I love going to artist spaces and galleries and auction houses. It's great because it has absolutely nothing to do with Metallica. It is my place of refuge".
When he and the rest of Metallica were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Ulrich was the first Dane to receive the honor.
Regarding his musical love for other bands, Ulrich has stated on several occasions that he is "U2's biggest fan" ("the hughest fan of U2"). In fact, in December 2009 he selected for Rolling Stone magazine the album No Line on the Horizon as one of the top 25 albums of the decade, defining the theme "Moment of Surrender" as the best song of the decade. He also chose & # 34; Vertigo & # 34; within the top 25.
Pop Culture
Ulrich's involvement in the conflict with Napster was parodied in Christian Rock Hard, an episode of the satirical animated television series South Park. In the episode, the kids are taught that it's 'bad' downloading music illegally because billionaires like Ulrich now have to wait a little longer to buy fancy things like a shark tank to put poolside at his mansion (also, when Kyle has his "weekly epiphany" and proclaims that bands should be about music, artists react with "we are for the money", nodding with Ulrich). Episode 9 is titled Not a Big Deal of season 7. Other references can be found in the Weird Al Yankovic song Don't Download This Song" and the MC Lars song "Hurricane Fresh". From this conflict with Napster was derived his nickname "Lar$".
Lars made a brief appearance on Linkin Park's live DVD Live in Texas, dressed as a green-fisted rabbit-man during his rendition of "From The Inside".
Lars appears, along with the other members of Metallica, in the film The Darwin Awards. He portrays himself at a concert when two of the film's characters are involved in an accident when the band is performing on stage. Lars has also made appearances in the Flight 666 films, Global Metal and Get Him to the Greek.
Lars also appears with Metallica in the season 18 episode of The Simpsons titled The Mook, the Chef, the Wife and Her Homer. He has made appearances on the TV shows Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and The Rachel Maddow Show, he will also have a cameo in the new Guns N&# video 39; Roses, "Better", which has not yet been released to the public.
In 2011 he appeared in the TV movie Hemingway & Gellhorn in the role of director "Joris Ivens".

Equipment
Ulrich uses Tama Drums (where he is one of the few drummers to have his own custom drum design), Zildjian cymbals, and Remo heads. It's rare to see him without these markings on stage. He has been known to use a mix of brands to record studio albums, including: Ludwig drums, Gretsch drums and Sabian cymbals. Ulrich used Regal Tip drumsticks for a time, but switched to Easton Ahead in 1994. Drum maker Tama has produced two custom Lars Ulrich snare drums, one with a steel shell (with rhinestone finish) and one with a brass bell that in it is currently Tama's most expensive drum in their regular catalogue. Both drums are 14x6.5".
