History

Anacarsis Lanús.
Railway station.

Prior to the Spanish conquest, the current territory of Lanús was inhabited by Pampas and Guaraní tribes, who were nomads, hunters and gatherers. After the second founding of Buenos Aires by Juan de Garay in 1580, the establishment of farms and ranches was carried out, and the territorial organization around the city in "pagos" (territories delimited by rivers and streams), dividing the current territory of Lanús between the Magdalena payment, the Matanza payment and the Riachuelo payment.

With the passage of time the payments became parties, in 1795 the lands in this area became part of the Quilmes district, the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata already created. It should be added that during the English invasions, British troops passed through the lands of the current Lanús district, after their disembarkation, on their march towards Buenos Aires.

In 1852, when Dr. Vicente López y Planes was acting governor of Buenos Aires, lands from the Quilmes district were taken, given its large extension, and the Barracas al Sur Party was founded. This new party housed the current municipalities of Avellaneda, Lanús and Lomas de Zamora, and the current Brownian towns of Adrogué and San José.

The city owes its name to the landowner Anacarsis Lanús (1820-1888), born in Concepción del Uruguay, Entre Ríos, son of Lanusse Casenave from Béarna and Teresa Fernández de Castro from Buenos Aires.

Lanús acquired land from the current district with the intention of founding a town, building its fifth house on Camino Real (today Av. Hipólito Yrigoyen), in front of the current train station.

Its first permanent population was established by the creative genius of Guillermo Gaebeler, who founded the town of General Paz on October 20, 1888, six days after the death of Anacarsis Lanús, and of which he would be the builder and promoter. He designed its streets and squares, which he named after the life and actions of General Paz, at the request of his friend General Bartolomé Mitre. For their part, Anacarsis and his brother Juan would have been the promoters of the volunteer firefighters society, the first medical care room in the place and the development society, built homes and managed loans for construction, among other tasks. His remains and those of his wife, Dolores Rojas Valdés, are found in the 'Santa Teresa de Jesús' Chapel, between Dr. Melo and Llavallol streets.
