The club was managed by football legend Diego Maradona from 2019 until his death in November 2020.
In football, its main discipline, it is one of the eight clubs with the most seasons in the Argentine First Division (96). In addition, it has 34,000 members. His two official AFA achievements, in this discipline, were the First Division Championship obtained in 1929 and the 1993 AFA Centennial Cup.
History
Presidents
Throughout its more than 134 years of history, there were 59 presidents who had the responsibility of directing the institutional destinies of the club. Many of them executed actions so that the entity grew over the years. Some remained more in the memory of the club's fans, due to their achievements, or for having carried out outstanding works.
Saturnino Perdriel, a prominent neighbor and merchant of the time, was the founder and first president of Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, an official in the Ministry of Finance of the province of Buenos Aires, who died prematurely in 1888 (one year after the presidency).
Currently, the president of the club is elected by its members, through elections that are held every three years. In these elections, all members of the club over 18 years of age, with three years of age, have the right to elect and be elected. of seniority as members to vote and seven to be part of the Board of Directors.
Shield
The shield of the La Plata Gymnastics and Fencing Club is composed of a crown in the upper part of which a helmet with a crest stands out and in the center, on enamel and with the colors of the club (white and navy blue), it goes in highlight its monogram. In the upper corners, as a guard, the handles of a saber and a foil appear, the tips protruding from the lower part of the shield. On the sides of the center the helmet extends, on each side, a branch of laurels.

Over time it has undergone some changes. From 1887 to 1928, the shield designed by Emilio Coutauret was used, which had a more artisanal and ornate design. In 1964, when the statute was reformed, it was changed to a simpler one, but without losing the essence of the original. The latter is the one currently used, which has undergone some minor changes in recent years. During the presidency of Héctor Domínguez, the center's acronym was changed, replacing the historic "CGE" (Gymnastics and Fencing Club), with the "GELP" (Gymnastics and Fencing). La Plata), modification that lasted in the following mandates of Francisco Gliemmo and Juan José Muñoz. Since the beginning of Walter Gisande's presidency, the original acronym "CGE" was returned.
Uniform
The Gimnasia y Esgrima uniform is based on the colors of the club's shield, which were established in its social statute.
- Holding uniform: White t-shirt with a horizontal sea blue strip, trousers and white stockings.
- Alternative uniform: Marine blue t-shirt with a white horizontal strip, trousers and sea blue stockings.
Evolution of the uniform
Throughout history, the soccer jersey has changed its design, especially in its beginnings. A brief review:
- 1903-1905: The first Gymnastics t-shirt had the celestial and white colors in vertical stripes. The founders wanted to emphasize that it was a club in the Argentine Republic.
- 1905-1910: The second t-shirt was blue and white (also in vertical stripes) and white pants. The colors were changed to differentiate it from the Avellaneda Racing Club.
- 1910 forward : White with a horizontal strip of marine blue on its average part. The alternative shirt invests the colors being navy blue with the white strip.

Stadium
The Juan Carmelo Zerillo, also known as the "Estadio del Bosque", is the stadium of the La Plata Gymnastics and Fencing Club. It is located in the city forest, more precisely on 60th and 118th avenues. It was inaugurated on April 26, 1924 by Governor José Luis Cantilo and has undergone several renovations.
The current capacity is limited by the lack of dismantled stands and security requirements; Consequently, it is enabled for 27,717 spectators, with approximately 4,500 seats and 23,200 popular seats. It is expected that with the renovations that are being carried out it can reach a capacity of approximately 30,000 spectators.
The property also has an Olympic-size pool and another smaller one, where intensive swimming and free-pool courses are held every summer. It also has three tennis courts, where the club's tennis school operates.
After having a place for soccer practice on 12 and 71, on March 22, 1923, work began on 60 and 118, setting the measurements of the field at 118 meters long by 74 meters wide.
At the beginning of 1924, grass patches were placed on the sports field and a locker room was set up for visiting players and referees. A chalet was also built, located on the site of the current children's pool, which served as an administration, reception and locker room location for local players. In addition, it was decided that the members' gallery would face the Avenida del Bosque behind.
On April 26, 1924, the works were inaugurated, with the presence of the governor of that time, Dr. Cantilo. Although the official ceremony was postponed until the anniversary of the city of La Plata, when Gimnasia played a friendly match with Peñarol de Montevideo.
Between 2006 and 2008 the stadium could not be used for official tournaments, due to CoProSeDe safety regulations. The club played home matches at the Ciudad de La Plata stadium during that period. However, the city's mayor, Pablo Bruera, authorized the club to return to its stadium in mid-2008. However, Gimnasia can play at home in Ciudad de La Plata whenever it so decides.
In 2015 the construction of the "H" stalls began. Néstor Basile, this being the first stage of a strategic plan for the expansion and complete remodeling of the stadium. The completed project will have a total capacity of 23,500 spectators, but maintaining its character as a "transparent" and open to the forest.
Given the financial situation of the club, a date for the completion of the renovations is not planned.
Facilities

The facilities of the Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata club include, in addition to its soccer stadium, a 160-hectare property, another for children's soccer, a sports center, a kindergarten, a primary school and a secondary school. In addition, there are dozens of subsidiaries located throughout the country and the world.
- Estancia Chica: It is a predium of 160 hectares, where the trainings of the professional football table and the concentrations are performed before each meeting, and the recreation of the partner. A 900-square-metre campus is currently being built to transfer training from the professional Casona campus to this new site. In 1970 a paradisiacal place located in Abasto, with 160 hectares of green spaces and old buildings, was acquired by the Club. Estancia Chica is currently one of the most significant facilities in Gimnasia.
- Polideportivo Víctor Nethol: Inaugurated in 1978, Gimnasia and Esgrima has a sports center where they perform competencies of First Basketball Division, volleyball and futsal with capacity for 2600 people, which increases to 3500 spectators when performing musical shows. In December, seats will be placed in the popular ones to readapt them to silver plates, to be independent from Headquarters. There are also usually artistic Skating shows. While it is very difficult to separate it from the Social Headquarters by being in the same predium (foot 4 between 51 and 53) the Polideportivo has its own life and becomes the heart of the Club by passing through it more than a thousand athletes of all ages who use their facilities.
- Social Headquarters: Area in which, in addition to the management and attention of the partners, sports such as basketball, futsal and volleyball are practiced, among others. At the beginning of December, the remodeling of the front of the social headquarters will begin in order to unify the image. In 1926 the Club acquires an appropriate predium for the realization of its founding objectives and subsequently builds its Social Headquarters. The strategic location would allow the partners, who grew significantly, to approach the facilities more easily.
- The Forest: It is a space of 11 hectares where children's soccer categories are practiced and performed. In addition, the Hockey team on female lawn is local in this predium. With the idea of focusing the practices and games of the boys participating in the Children ' s Football in the same place, it was necessary to use some lands of Berisso, close to the Forest Stadium and to allocate them for the construction of several football pitches.
- Education: The club has a Infant Garden opened in 1999 (works on 62nd Street 474), a Primary School called "Dr. Rene Favaloro opened in 2001 (works on 123rd Street and 58th Street) and a Secondary School opened in early 2006.

Nicknames
The fans of Gimnasia y Esgrima have several nicknames, among them are:
- Triplers: Support that began being for footballers, who for the 1920s were mostly from the cities of Ensenada and Berisso, and who, in some cases, continued to work in the slaughterhouses that abounded in those cities. When working with animal guts, usually cattle, they were called "triperos".
- Wolf: The nickname is the work of the cartoonist Julio César Trouet, who worked for the newspaper El Día de la ciudad de La Plata. Until 1953 the emblem that identified the club was that of a butcher (in relation to the nickname of "triperos"). The idea of the wolf arose because the stadium of Gimnasia and Esgrima is located in the forest of the city, and the team was recognized for its cunning and speed, as well as the animal that bears that name. Although the figure of the wolf was not taken immediately, it was from the great campaign of 1962 that the nickname and the club became practically synonymous.
- Basurero: The nickname was given by the same supporters of the club because Oscar Venturino, president of the institution between 1968 and 1979, was the owner of a house waste collection company. Although he is not the most popular nickname he has, he was during the 1970s.
- Mens Sana: It is part of the club motto, mens sana in corpore. It is a Latin date of Youth, whose original meaning is that of the need for a balanced spirit in a balanced body; it is not, therefore, the same sense with which today is used: "healthy in a healthy body".
- 22: The collective name of the swollen is "The 22". This because the number 22 in the quiniela means "El Loco" and the most important barrabrava of Gimnasia Marcelo Amuchástegui was nicknamed "El Loco Fierro".[chuckles]required]
Homonymous Clubs
The club also has clubs of the same name and founded in its honor in the provinces of Río Negro, Mendoza, Jujuy, Buenos Aires, Neuquén, Entre Ríos and Formosa. Some of the homonymous clubs:
- Gimnasia and Jujuy's Spear.
- Gimnasia y Esgrima de Mendoza.
- Gymnastics and Salta Shooting.
- Gimnasia and Esgrima de Santa Fe.
- Gymnastics and Spell (Pergamino).
- Gimnasia y Esgrima de Concepción del Uruguay.

Surveys
A survey on football preferences carried out by the Nation's Media Secretariat in 2006, indicated that in La Plata the majority of the population turns out to be fans of Gimnasia y Esgrima, with 20.5 percent, while that its rival, Estudiantes de La Plata, has 19.8 percent of it. According to that same survey, the capital of the province of Buenos Aires would be, along with Rosario, one of the few cities in the country where the predominance of the two largest Argentine soccer clubs (Boca Juniors and River Plate) is not such.
The preference survey coincides with the one carried out by the consulting firm Equis in 2003, where it had concluded that in La Plata the supporters of the local clubs are predominant, in this case Gimnasia and Estudiantes, relegating the fans of the two clubs most popular in the country, Boca Juniors and River Plate. This consultancy carried out another survey with similar characteristics in 2009, whose data confirms that in La Plata, as in other Argentine cities such as Santa Fe, Rosario or San Miguel de Tucumán, they are predominant the supporters of Gimnasia and Estudiantes, relegating the fans of the two most popular clubs in Argentina.
The survey "Fans and Football" carried out nationwide in March 2006 by the consulting firm TNS Gallup for Rexona, reflects a series of more than significant results about the passion and feelings of all football fans. The numbers were overwhelming, since almost 7 out of every 10 Argentines were passionate about soccer, the most popular sport in Argentina and in the world. This survey places Gimnasia seventh in popularity with 1% nationwide, sharing that position with Club Estudiantes de La Plata, Newell's Old Boys, Talleres de Córdoba and Vélez Sarsfield.
Another survey, produced by the Buenos Aires newspaper Clarín during 2010 for the Argentine Bicentennial, places Gimnasia among the 10 "most popular teams in the country" - with 1% nationwide - along with Boca Juniors, River Plate, San Lorenzo, Racing Club, Independiente, Rosario Central, Colón, Belgrano and Newell's Old Boys.
World Gymnastics and Fencing Fan Day
Many First Division clubs in Argentina and around the world have their day and the La Plata club celebrates "World Gymnastics and Fencing Fan Day" on December 10 of each year. The history of the festive date is related to the first march that the triperos made to the municipality to demand the transfer of the stadium lands. The promoter of the idea was the journalist Néstor Basile, editor of the magazine “Tribuna Gimnasista”. In the 2008 commemoration, eleven thousand people attended the forest stadium.

Coaches

The Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata Club has had a total of 63 soccer coaches throughout its history. The club's first coach was the Hungarian Emérico Hirschl, who coached the institution between 1932 and 1934.
Some coaches who remained in the memory of the club were Nito Veiga (who achieved promotion in 1984), Roberto Perfumo (coach in the final of the Centenario Cup), Carlos Timoteo Griguol (who led the team in three stages, totaling ten years) and the former soccer player Pedro Troglio.

In 1993 Roberto Perfumo took charge of the technical management of the club, prior to the final of the Centenario Cup, of which he would become the winner. A year later, Carlos Timoteo Griguol took over as coach and achieved 3 runners-up finishes (1995 Clausura Tournament, 1996 Clausura Tournament and 1998 Apertura Tournament). He would manage until 1999, when he would emigrate to Betis in Spain. He would return shortly after to direct the Wolf in the 2000/2001 season, and then be replaced by the Uruguayan Gregorio Pérez. In the 2003/2004 season Griguol began his third stage at Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, where he finished his career as a soccer coach.

On January 3, 2008, the position of coach of Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata was taken over by the club's former soccer player, Guillermo "Topo" Sanguinetti. "Topo" said goodbye to football at the age of 37, totaling 383 games. local and 18 international, being the second footballer with the most appearances in the centenary history of Gimnasia y Esgrima, behind Jorge San Esteban. Due to the low number of points that the team managed to collect, a common agreement was reached between the leadership of Gimnasia and Sanguinetti for their separation.
On September 30, 2008, the La Plata Gymnastics and Fencing Club hired Leonardo Madelón as technical director. After a brief stint with Pablo Fernández as coach, Diego Cocca took charge of the technical direction.
In 2011, to face the B Nacional, Osvaldo Ingrao took charge of the team, but due to poor results he was succeeded by Pedro Troglio, who achieved promotion and fifth place on his return to First Division. After the departure of Pedro Troglio, Gustavo Alfaro takes over, after being in charge of the team for 1 year.
At the end of Gustavo Alfaro's contract, Mariano Soso took the vacant position of technical director. On Thursday, December 28, 2017, it was confirmed that after a brief tenure as technical director, Mariano Soso resigned from the position, with Facundo Sava taking over, who wore the tri-shirt from 1997 to 2002. After poor results, he was succeeded by Pedro Troglio again. Which gets Gimnasia to reach the final of the 2017-18 Argentine Cup. After losing the final and poor results in the league, he was fired and Darío Ortiz, former player of the AFA Centenario Cup champion Club, would be his replacement.
For the 2019-20 season, the "Indio" Ortiz leaves his position for not achieving good results. His replacement would be nothing more and nothing less than Diego Maradona accompanied by Sebastián & # 34; Gallego & # 34; Mendez. It would be his return to Argentine football, as a coach and with the aim of saving Gimnasia from relegation, which was increasingly compromised at the bottom of the average table. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, relegations are suspended and Gimnasia, which had earned quite a few points, manages to save itself.
For 2021, he will be succeeded by the interim duo of Mariano Messera and Leandro Martini, who would leave office at the end of August 2021. "Pipo" Gorosito would succeed them.
Diego Armando Maradona
After the resignation of coach Darío Ortiz on August 31, 2019 due to poor results, the club began the search for a new coach. On the morning of September 5, the club president, Gabriel Pellegrino, met with Matías Morla, Diego Maradona's lawyer, to confirm his signing. On September 8, he was received by 20,000 of the club's fans at the Juan Carmelo Zerillo stadium. Maradona, shocked by the reception, expressed:
You fans will give us the plus to win the games. And we're gonna win them! This shirt is the most beautiful in the world because it has our colors. Here I am at my house.
The revolution caused by the arrival of Maradona was such that the club added 3,000 members in three days and sold out of the new shirts that had been put on sale with the number 10 and the inscription "Maradona" In the back. In the Argentine Super League he had six wins, five draws and eight losses, while he also won the only match he managed to play for the Argentine Cup to eliminate Sportivo Barracas. His last game in which he led Gimnasia itself was against Boca Juniors for the Super League, where the "Lobo" lost 0:1.
Argentine football was interrupted for many months as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but returned with the 2020 Professional League Cup, where in its first match Gimnasia defeated Patronato 3:0, However Maradona did not He led the team alongside Sebastián Ariel Méndez as he did since his arrival, but Méndez led only because Maradona was facing health problems. This would continue to happen in the rest of the games until his death.

Futsal
El Lobo was one of the founding clubs of the Futsal Championship of the Argentine Football Association in 1986. However, its time in said championship was fleeting and it was absent for several decades.
After 35 years, Gimnasia will participate in the First Division, after becoming champion of the First B in 2021.
History
Beginnings
Along with 10 other clubs, Gimnasia participated in the inaugural championship of the Argentine Football Association. In the tournament he achieved 4 victories and 1 draw. For unknown reasons, his points were voided and he has not participated since 1987.
Return and descent
In 2015, the wolf returned to the AFA futsal championships. The club had to join the First C, a category that had been created a year before. However, her campaigns were very weak: in 2015 she ended up in a position of disaffiliation, but she was able to continue competing because she was suppressed; In 2016 he again ended up in a position of disaffiliation. However, in 2017 the First D was created, so the team was relegated to the fourth category.
From First D to First B
In 2017, Gimnasia's course changes completely when it competes in the inaugural Primera D tournament. It competes in Zone B and gets 48 points, obtained in 22 games with 14 wins and 6 draws; reaching second place in the zone and obtaining the right to play a match with the guard of Zone A for the third promotion. The match was played on December 5 in Avellaneda on the S.E.C.L.A. court. against Excursionistas, who opened the scoring in the first half but, at the end of the match, the wolf got 2 goals from Ramírez and Saldivia to achieve the first promotion in the club's history.
In 2018 he returned to play in the Primera C, but this time he achieved a very different performance than in 2015 and 2016: he achieved second place in the championship with 78 points, achieved in 34 games with 24 wins and 6 draws, remaining behind of the champion Don Bosco, obtaining promotion several dates earlier by drawing against Caballito Juniors by 1 to 1.
Championship and promotion to First Division
In 2019 he received the lobo in Primera B, the result of 2 consecutive promotions obtained since 2017. In his debut in the category he would have the best campaign in recent years, being worthy of the promotion, but the The format of the 2 higher categories was different from that of Primera C and Primera D: after 38 dates, Gimnasia finished in first place, equaling with Camioneros on 82 points, due to goal difference it was in the aforementioned position; However, the 2 promotions had to be defined in the final phase, where the 8 best in the standings qualified. The lobo, being the leader, played against the eighth place Unión de Ezpeleta who, despite the distance in the positions, managed to beat the local lobo and, after tying in the second game, eliminated Gymnastics and advanced to the semifinals.
In 2020, a new season of Primera B began, where the wolf started with a victory over whoever had eliminated it in the previous competition. However, after the first date was played, the tournament was suspended due to health restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and was finally cancelled. After months of waiting, in November the new tournament is held and Gimnasia takes first place in Zone 4, moving on to the final phase for the 2 promotions, where it would be quickly eliminated by Argentinos Juniors.
In the 2021 season, it reached third place in Zone 1, which is why it qualified for the decagonal of the Championship Zone. Their performance improved even more, finishing second in the decagonal, moving on to the quarterfinals. In that instance, Pacifico was measured against the team that it defeated in the first game, but after falling on penalties in the second game, a third game had to be played, where it won 2 to 1. In the semifinals, the long-awaited promotions were disputed, and Gimnasia faced Country, which had just eliminated the leader of the decagonal Nueva Chicago. However, that did not stop him and, after winning 4 to 2 in Dock Sud, he achieved promotion in Lomas by winning 7 to 3. Having achieved his return to the First Division after 35 years, he faced Atlanta in the final, that would return to First Division after 17 years at the cost of eliminating none other than River Plate: winning 4 to 2 in Dock Sud and losing 4 to 3 in Villa Crespo, it won the championship by beating 7 to 2 in the last match in Ezpeleta, becoming champion for the first time in its history.
