History

The National Agrarian University La Molina was founded on July 22, 1902 by President Eduardo López de Romaña, initially as National School of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine. At the request of the Peruvian government through its Ambassador in Antwerp, a Belgian mission from the University of Gembloux, made up of agricultural engineers Georges Vanderghem, Enrique Van Hoorde, Víctor Marie and Jean Michel, as well as the veterinarian Arthur Declerck from the Cureghem Veterinary School.

The official inauguration was on July 22, 1902 as a department of the Development Directorate, with Don Eugenio Larrabure Unanue being Minister of the branch. In 1912, the Central Agronomic Station was created with a view to developing agricultural experimentation and providing services to farmers. This is how, before completing fifteen years of foundation, the School is already an entity that applies the three fundamental purposes of the Agrarian University: teaching, research and extension. The first location assigned to the National School of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine was a pavilion on the Santa Beatriz farm, where it operated for 30 years. In 1933 it moved to the La Molina farm, in the Ate Valley, where it operates to this day. The Organic Law of Public Education of 1941 had already granted the School the category of higher education institution and established its pedagogical, administrative and economic autonomy.

In 1959, University Law 13417 recognized the National School of Agriculture as a university and, as such, changed its name to the current La Molina National Agrarian University. In 1961, the following faculties began to function as academic organizations: Agronomy, Zootechnics, Agricultural Engineering and the Institute of Research and Advanced Studies. The same year, the creation of the Faculty of Sciences and that of Economic and Social Sciences was sanctioned, which later changed its name to Social Sciences and later to Economics and Planning. Both Faculties began their work simultaneously at the beginning of 1962. In 1963 the Faculty of Forestry Sciences began its activities, in 1966 the Faculty of Fisheries, and in 1969 the Faculty of Food Industries. Later, the Sierra, Selva and Forestry Research Institutes were organized as teaching and research centers that cover fields related to various faculties for the study of specific problems.

The campus of the La Molina Agrarian University is located in the city of Lima, in the La Molina District, neighboring other research centers such as the National Institute of Agrarian Research (INIA), the National Agrarian Health Service (SENASA) and the International Potato Center. The university campus occupies an area of 220 hectares, being the largest campus in the country, it has modern classrooms, laboratories and workshops with the highest technology. The university also has extensive green areas and research areas.

In its more than 6,000 hectares, the necessary facilities are provided for the delivery of intensive courses and field practices, the development of appropriate technologies is encouraged, and it contributes to development in the areas of its influence. La Molina has three regional development institutes located in the three great ecological zones of Peru: coast, mountains and jungle, seeking to help the sustainable development of the areas that host them. In addition, La Molina has other experimentation centers and business units, where agricultural, forestry, fishing, agroindustrial and business practices are also carried out.

The National Agrarian University La Molina has always collaborated significantly in the scientific development of Peru throughout its history. Currently, in Peru, the Agrarian University is one of the few Peruvian universities that conduct research (currently only 10 universities out of more than 80 do so), all of this mainly due to the fact that research development has not been a properly funded area. by the Peruvian government in recent decades.

Research centers and institutes

Currently the National Agrarian University La Molina has the following research institutes:

  • INDDA (Instituto de desarrollo agroindustrial)
  • IBT (Biotechnology Institute)
  • IPPS (Institute of small sustainable production)
  • IRD Costa (Regional coastal development Institute)
  • IRD Sierra (Regional Sierra Development Institute)
  • IRD Selva (Regional Jungle Development Institute)

Scientific production and publications

  • Revista Agronegocios: In order to help in the development of Peru's leadership in agro-exports and provide much-neededed related information. At the end of 2003 he began as the Agro-negocios Bulletin, with the participation of some teachers of the master's degree in Agro-negocios to then form the Revista Agro-negocios from August 2007. It includes sections of Agrobusiness or Agroexport, Foreign Trade, Market Research, FTA, Sierra Exportadora, Environment, Markets, Entrepreneurship, Statistics, Research, among others.

Agronomy has the great commitment to contribute to the development of the country, as through the dissemination of technical and scientific articles, which are abstracts of research of teachers, students or other important projects, influential in academic and professional knowledge. The Agronomy Directive, composed of students of Agronomy of UNALM, has the participation of a Technical Committee, composed of teachers of the Faculty of Agronomy, Economics and Planning of UNALM, thus ensuring the quality of the information that is disseminated through the editions. Within the functions of Agronomy, the integration of the students of Agronomy of Peru, through the Correspondence Network, is highlighted, since it is important to exchange information regarding the agrarian systems of Peru. On the other hand, to complement the dissemination of agricultural technologies, Agronomy, frequently develops courses and integrated modules of crops, which are aimed at professionals, field technicians, agricultural producers and students linked to agro.
  • Revista Ecology Aplicada: Revista del departamento de Biología de la UNALM. Founded in 2002, it is a scientific journal exclusively in the field of Ecology. It is edited by the Blgo. Germán Arellano Cruz.
  • Revista Xilema: Revista prepared by the students of the Faculty of Forest Sciences of the Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina. With the celebration of its 25th anniversary, it is placed among one of the oldest magazines in Latin America in the forest field. The journal is aimed at disseminating forest, environmental and biological issues. This magazine was relaunched in 2006 by forest students, and continues to be in force, improving more and more and reaching not only UNALM students, but also several universities related to the forest sector in the country and also international institutions.

University museums

  • Museum of Entomology "Klaus Raven Büller": The Museum of Entomology began in 1962, at the initiative of Dr. Klaus Raven Büller, in order to have a reference collection that shows the diversity of the entomological fauna that Peru has, in addition to registering the species of agricultural importance, doctor-veterinary, predators and parasitoids. In the world literature there are lists of Peruvian species, missing in them knowledge regarding geographical distribution, biology, behavior and importance, which allows us to know their role in nature, hence Dr. Klaus Raven Büller initiated and sponsored research work with which and through the museum, it seeks to expand knowledge of the species that exist in Peru. To this end the museum has the support of renowned specialists and institutions both national and foreign. At present, the museum has approximately 3,000 species represented in 10,000 specimens, and it also has 300,000 specimens of species that are not yet determined and with new species for science. The recorded species present collection data, and information about their habits and importance; these data allow us to know place of occurrence, times of greater abundance, hosts, type of food (phytosphages, sapróphages, predators, parasitoids, etc.), as a consequence their role in nature.
  • Botanic Garden "Octavio Velarde Núñez": The Botanic Garden of the Agraria National University La Molina was initiated in 1904 at the Santa Beatriz Fundo in the then "National School of Agriculture"(ENA), by the Ing. Astronomer Leopoldo Hecq. Later, with the transfer of the ENA to the La Molina Fundo, this is reorganized after 1933, by the Ing. Forestal Julio Gaudrón, in the place it currently occupies, about an area of 2 ha approximately. The Botanical Garden "Octavio Velarde Núñez", place for study and recreation, is currently one of the few botanical gardens in activity in the city of Lima.
