Kurdistan flag
The flag of Kurdistan (Kurdish: Alaya Rengîn) appeared during the Kurdish struggle for independence from the Ottoman Empire (1920).
In 1946 the Republic of Kurdistan in Mehabad (now Iran), adopted that flag.
The central symbol represents the nergis, yellow wild flowers that grow in the valleys of Kurdistan, it is also associated with a sun sign typical of the pre-Islamic traditions of the Kurds: Yazidism and Zoroastrianism. Currently the colors of the flag are used with some variations as a symbol of the Kurdish population of Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria. The use of the flag is outlawed in Turkey, and during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, coalition forces tried unsuccessfully to prevent it from being flown in public to ease the atmosphere of ethnic tension between Kurds and Arabs.
