Krai

Krai or kray (Russian: край; often translated as "region", "territory" or "province") is a term used to refer to several of Russia's 85 administrative regions. The word krai (which also means frontier or end), is used for regions located on the economic and geographic periphery. Its plural in Russian is kraya (края). In Spanish the word "marca" has been used with the same meaning for centuries.

The krais, oblasts, and republics have the same constitutional status. Krasnodar Krai has a population of 5 million, similar to Norway.

A krai is divided into districts (Russian: районы, pronounced: raiony).
