Kopete is a free software application for flexible instant messaging and extensible multi-protocol system, it can communicate with protocols like ICQ, AIM, Gadu-Gadu, IRC, Jabber/XMPP, Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger. Kopete is part of the KDE project and with excellent integration with this graphical environment.

Release history

  • 26 December 2001 - Chilean Duncan Mac-Vicar Prett starts working on an ICQ clone for KDE after a change in the ICQ protocol was produced, which unused existing customers until then.
    • A few weeks later other ICQ and Duncan clients are updated to redraft their efforts towards a multiprotocol plugin-based messenger, using Noatun's architecture as a basis.
    • Nick Betcher joins Duncan in his effort, writes the first extensions of AIM and ICQ. Duncan continues to work in the central library and a basic MSN plugin.
  • 3 March 2002 - Kopete 0.2
  • April 5, 2002 - Kopete 0.3, new expansion for the IRC network by Nick Betcher and many improvements.
  • June 1, 2002 - Kopete 0.4, new Jabber/XMPP expansion by Daniel Stone.
    • Martjin Klingens and Ryan Cumming join the team reorganizing Kopete to greatly facilitate their maintenance.
    • 16 June 2002 - Kopete 0.4.2
  • 30 September 2002 - Kopete 0.5
    • Oliver Goffart joins the team and next to Martjin Klingens starts completing an add-on or plugin for MSN.
  • 9 February 2003 - Kopete 0.6
  • August 8, 2003 - Kopete 0.7, major improvements.
    • 11 August 2003 - Kopete 0.7.1
    • September 9, 2003 - Kopete 0.7.2, accepts MSN Messenger Protocol 9.
    • September 10, 2003 - Kopete 0.7.3, accepts new Yahoo! protocol! Messenger.
  • September 2, 2004 - Kopete 0.8, adapted to the latest versions of the KDE desktop.
    • 4 September 2004 - Kopete 0.8.2
    • 10 July 2004 - Kopete 0.8.4
  • 23 May 2005- Kopete 0.10.1 and Kopete 0.9.3 patched for MSN
    • 8 August 2005 - Kopete 0.10.3 is released.
    • 13 October 2005 - Kopete 0.10.4 is launched and included in KDE 3.4.3
    • November 29, 2005 - Kopete 0.11, brings as novelty the webcam support for the MSN protocol.
    • 1 June 2006 - Kopete 0.12, launched and included in KDE 3.5.3.
    • July 13, 2006 - Kopete 0.12.1, solves problems with the ICQ protocol and fixes other failures.
    • August 11, 2006 - Kopete 0.12.2, solves more problems with the ICQ protocol and solves various errors.
    • 11 October 2006 - Kopete 0.12.3 is released
    • January 23, 2007 - Kopete 0.12.4 is released, included in KDE 3.5.6. Improved webcam support in MSN.

Kopete 0.12.7 is released bundled with KDE 3.5.8

    • 11 January 2008 - Kopete 0.50.0 is launched in KDE 4.0.0
