Konqueror

Konqueror is a web browser, file manager, and file viewer. It is an official part of the KDE project. It is free and open source software, and like the rest of the KDE components, it is released under the GPL license.

The name Konqueror is a pun on the names of other browsers: first came Navigator, then Explorer, and finally Konqueror. Also, it follows the KDE convention that program names contain the letter K.

User interface

Konqueror's user interface is somewhat reminiscent of Microsoft Internet Explorer (in turn modeled after Netscape Navigator and NSCA Mosaic), although it is much more customizable. It works extensively with "panels", which can be repositioned or added. For example, you can have a bookmarks panel on the left side of your browser window, and by clicking on a bookmark, the respective web page opens in the main panel on the right. Alternatively, a hierarchical list of folders can be displayed in one pane and the contents of the selected folder in another. Panels are very flexible and can even include console windows. The configuration of the panels can be saved, having some already included by default. For example, the "Midnight Commander" displays the window divided into two vertical panels, each of which displays a folder, a web page, or a file preview.

Browsing functions (back, forward, history, etc.) are available during all operations. Most of the keyboard shortcuts can be reassigned using the graphical settings. The address bar has extensive autocompletion support for local directories, addresses, and previous terms.

The application uses a single document interface. Multi-window mode is not supported (although it is possible to open a separate window, similar to Navigator). Version 3.1 and later support multiple tabs in one window.

Konqueror scores 89/100 in the Acid3 Test.

File Manager

Konqueror also supports browsing local directories, either by entering the path in the address bar or by selecting icons on panels.

Konqueror allows:

  • Visualize the contents of multiple directories in simultaneous.
  • Sort the items in each directory according to preset criteria (for date, size, name, type, etc.).
  • Generate previews of text files, HTML documents, images and videos at the event.
  • Move, copy, delete, create, execute, display and edit files and directories from simple menus.

File Viewer

Using KParts technology, Konqueror can run inside components capable of viewing (and sometimes editing) specific file types. This allows you, for example, to view a KOffice document within Konqueror, avoiding the need to open another application.

KIO

Konqueror on Windows.

In addition to browsing directories and websites, Konqueror uses the KIO (KDE Input-Output) plug-ins to extend its capabilities. KIO allows access to different protocols such as HTTP or FTP. Konqueror can also use KIO plug-ins to access ZIP archives, Samba (Windows) shares or any other imaginable protocol such as ed2k links ("ed2k://"), Audio CD ("audiocd& #34;), ripping its content simply by dragging and dropping. The FISH IOSlave ("fish://user@host") allows you to manage files in secure remote shells, and the "man:" and "info:"allow you to access the man and info pages respectively. To see the full list of available IOSlaves, open the KDE Information Center and look in the "protocols" section.
