Kinjite (禁じ手 or 禁手 (in Japanese) lit. "forbidden hand") is a technique/movement that is prohibited in sumo and can lead to immediate disqualification of the combat of the rikishi that performs it. The following faults are kinjite:

  • Hit the opponent with the closed fist.
  • Pull the opponent's hair.
  • Paint your fingers or the opponent's solar plexus.
  • Hit simultaneously with both palms of the hand the opponent's ears (bell clap).
  • Grab, push or hit the opponent's groin (low blow).
  • Grab the opponent down the throat.
  • Kick over your knee.
  • Screw your fingers to the opponent.

Any of the aforementioned causes immediate disqualification, although they are not frequently seen, especially in high-level competitions, especially among sekitori. Perhaps the most common is pulling the hair when performing a chonmage.

While grabbing the opponent by the throat is not allowed, pushing them with the palm of the hand at the height of the hand is allowed.

There are some moves that are allowed for rikishi but prohibited for most junior wrestlers (at the school level), such as the harite, punching the face of the opponent with an open hand.
