A kilometer (also spelled kilometer, although deprecated) is a unit of length. It is the third multiple of the meter, equivalent to 1000 meters.

Its symbol, km, does not accept the plural nor does it have a full stop —except when it is found as the last element of a phrase or sentence— because it is not an abbreviation. It is also noted that the prefix symbol kilo- must always be written with the lowercase and round letter k (that is, not in italics).
