Kender are members of a fictional race of small humanoid creatures from the world of Dragonlance.

Background

These creatures belonging to the Dragonlance legendarium are related to gnomes and dwarves. After finding the gray gem, some of the halflings of the original race wanted the gem out of greed, they became dwarves, those who wanted it to invent things with its power became gnomes, and those who only wanted it out of curiosity, in kender. This is not entirely accepted by these races, especially by the dwarves.

On the continent of Ansalon, belonging to the fictional world of Krynn, they are basically settled in two places: Kendermore and Kenderhome. However, it is common to find them anywhere in the world, given their adventurous nature. Their buildings are usually poorly maintained, and the layout of their streets is completely chaotic (for the members of the other species, not for them). They can also be found on the continent of Taladas, although these differ somewhat in behavior from their relatives further south (see sub-races section below).

Features

They measure around 120 centimeters and usually wear their hair up in a pompadour, which is their pride. Their faces appear jovial throughout their lives, although when they reach a certain age they are furrowed by several lines of fine wrinkles (a characteristic they consider very attractive).

They are curious creatures by nature, skilled in the arts of theft and stealth and friendly to everyone. They easily forgive insults and become convinced that the objects they steal from other beings accidentally ended up in their pockets (or they make another excuse similar to that). The latter is because it is in their nature to try to grab everything that catches their attention, without often being really aware of what they are doing. In their society this is not considered stealing, as they have a different concept of property. Among them it is absolutely normal to borrow things from other people if they are not using them. They take great offense if they are called thieves since, as in most non-evil cultures, kender are averse to crime.

They are immune to fear unless it is magical in nature, such as that caused by a Tower of High Sorcery or the aura of fear that surrounds evil dragons.

Over time, they can develop a feeling halfway between fear and concern, but not for themselves but for the state of their loved ones. Such a situation occurs in Tasslehoff Burrfoot, when in the Chronicles and Legends of the Dragonlance, he has already become accustomed to thinking that he could lose his most dear friends in battle.

Being a race created unintentionally by the gods, it is not subject to the laws of time. Therefore, they could change the course of future events if they traveled back in time. This reason means that they are prohibited from undertaking trips of this type, which does not mean that they will not try if the possibility arises.

When they die they never end up in the Abyss (the hell where evil beings end up), because they are creatures that cannot conceive any evil. In fact, the Queen of Darkness does not accept any member of this species.

Among their curious weapons, which generally have more than one use, is the jupak: a Y-shaped stick joined with a cloth to form a kind of sling.

When they come of age, they receive as a gift a set of lock picks, objects that they use a lot during the trips they make, especially in their youth (they feel a great "traveler's craving").

Kender Subraces

  • Afflicted: those who witnessed the destruction of Kendermore, perpetrated by the dragon Malystryx, largely lost their cheerful spirit.
  • Marak: from the northern continent, Taladas. As a result of cataclysm, its natural curiosity has become suspicious and paranoia.
  • Kendar: They dwell in a large cavern system near the south pole of Krynn, along with other human tribes and theiwar dwara. They are as friendly as the Kenders, but they usually have more martial training, and sell their services as mercenaries. They're less curious than the common kenders. If you haven't seen anything with your own eyes, it doesn't exist for them.
  • Forlorn: is a new type of undead creature introduced into Key of Destiny.
  • Aquatics: The only one that has knowledge is Swon.

Famous Kenders

The most famous have been:

  • Tasslehoff Burrfoot "Tas", Hero of the Spear.
  • Saltrampas, Tasslehoff's favorite uncle Burrfoot. (it is not known if it really existed, but all kenders are their nephews)
  • Kronnin-alin Thistleknot.
  • Kronn-alin Thistleknot.
  • Catt-alin Thistleknot.
  • Paxina-alin Thistleknot.
  • Swon.
  • Kender Ioga stalker.
  • Beleño.
  • Cambalache, Semikender who accompanied Raistlin and Caramon in "The forging of a Black Tunic"
  • Earwig Forcecerrojos, accompanied the twins Majere in "Majere brothers"
  • Smelevin, Dragon Hero
